Extractions: In hockey, you can hear the name Lemieux being spoken of frequently. However, quite often, the Lemieux in question is not Pittsburgh's Mario , but Dallas's Claude. Stars right winger Claude Lemieux may be one of the most despised men in hockey, but he is certainly one of the NHL's best all around players today. When it comes down to it, Claude Lemieux is one player you want on your team when the playoffs begin. Consider: Lemieux ranks around No. 100 in regular season scoring, but No. 7 in playoff scoring. Only Wayne Gretzky and Brett Hull have scored more game winners in the postseason than Lemieux. The neutral zone was the first site on the Internet to devote a section to Claude Lemieux. (Currently, there are now about six or seven new Lemieux pages.) In response to this, we have received tons of responses, from great support to great vulgarity and insults. We never expected the page would be this controversial. Many people (mostly Detroit supporters) ask, "Why would you dedicate a page to one of the NHL's dirtiest players?" The answer is easy. Claude Lemieux is and has been one of our favorite players in hockey.

Extractions: SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) The Phoenix Coyotes traded veteran right wing Claude Lemieux to the Dallas Stars on Thursday for left wing Scott Pellerin and a conditional pick in the 2004 draft. Lemieux, 37, had just six goals and eight assists in 36 games this season but missed nine games with a fractured foot. Lemieux signed with the Coyotes as a free agent in December 2000 after stops in Montreal, New Jersey and Colorado playing on four Stanley Cup championship teams along the way. "Claude adds experience, depth and versatility to our forward group," Dallas general manager Doug Armstrong said. "He is a proven winner who has a postseason resume that speaks for itself. We feel he will make an immediate impact for our organization." It was believed Lemieux's $3.1 million salary was a contributing factor for the cash-strapped Coyotes but general manager Mike Barnett did not immediately return calls about the trade. "I know Claude and his family love it here in Phoenix, but this is an opportunity for him to go to Dallas and possibly win another Stanley Cup," Coyotes coach Bob Francis said.

Extractions: DALLAS After winning the Stanley Cup four times, Claude Lemieux became a playoff junkie. He needed the intensity and excitement of postseason hockey to turn him into the gritty warrior loved by teammates and loathed by opponents. Lemieux Lemieux lost that edge over the last two-plus seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes . Realizing he wanted it back, Lemieux agreed to waive his no-trade clause to be sent to the Western Conference-leading Dallas Stars He arrived Friday, pulled on a No. 32 jersey and smiled wide. He noted that was the number he wore when he first broke into the NHL with Montreal in 1983 and, in a way, he felt like a kid again.

Montreal's 2nd Choice, 26th Overall, in 1983 Entry Draft If you look at the list of the top-ten All-Time Playoff Goal Scorers it reads like this: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Brett Hull, Mike Bossy, Maurice Richard, Claude Lemieux, Jean Beliveau, Mario Lemieux. Claude Lemieux? How did he sneak in there? THE SKILLS If you follow the NHL, especially during the postseason, then you know that Claude Lemieux is one of those guys that has taken advantage of the postseason spotlight on more than one occasion. He's won four Stanley Cups (that's double what another famous hockey player named Lemieux has won) and has accomplished that feat with three different teams. Just lucky to be along for the ride? Hardly. Lemieux broke into the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens in the 1983-84 season appearing in only eight contests but notching a goal, an assist, and 12 penalty minutes. Lemieux was sent to Verdun of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for seasoning the following year and earned First All-Star Team honors. However, he did appear in one contest with the Habs, registering an assist and seven penalty minutes - a typical Claude Lemieux evening. Still not a regular at the NHL level in the 1985-86 campaign, Lemieux skated with the Canadiens in 10 regular season contests racking up 22 penalty minutes, a goal and a pair of assists. Lemieux hung on with Montreal that year having been named to the Canadiens' postseason roster. It was during this season that Lemieux had his first taste of champagne from Lord Stanley's Cup as his Habs bested the Calgary Flames in just five games. It would be unfair to say that Lemieux was a hanger-on for his first Cup since he only appeared in 10 regular season games, but during the "second season," Lemieux played in 20 games, notched 10 goals, 16 points, and was obviously a physical presence as his 68 penalty minutes would indicate. Of the 10 times Lemieux lit the lamp, four of them were of the game-winning variety.
