Extractions: THE MONTREAL CANADIENS boasted a formidable hockey team in the '60swinning four Stanley Cups in a five-year span from 1964 to '69. The contributions of Hall-of-Famers Jean Beliveau, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer, and Jacques Laperriere are well documented. But there were unheralded kingpins on those great Montreal squads, namely Ted Harris and Terry Harper. Their efforts didn't often show up in the boxscore but the Canadiens would not have enjoyed prosperity without them. "They were an integral part of our success," says Laperriere, now an assistant coach with the New York Islanders. "In those days we had the forwards who could score the goals, so, to win we had to make sure we could do the job on defense. Ted and Terry did the job for us at even-strength and on the penalty kill. They didn't see the power play, so their point totals were not high. Hockey is not like some other sports where a pitcher or a quarterback can make or break a team. In our sport, success can only come about if everybody understands their role and does it well. Ted and Terry played huge roles in our success."

Still feeling the devastating effects of forward Marco Sturm's season ending injury, San Jose had little jump early on and Dallas took advantage. The Stars pounced on the Sharks early and held them in check en route to a 4-0 thrashing.

Extractions: Denver Post Sports Writer Nov. 19, 2000 - LOS ANGELES - Sixteen shots, one goal. Seven shots, four goals. That was your hockey game in a nutshell Saturday between the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center. The Kings beat the Avs 6-4, scoring four times on just the seven shots they got in the second period in handing Colorado its second straight loss. The Avs went home on a downer from the three-game road trip that started so well down the freeway in Anaheim. "It seemed like every shot they made was right inside the post," Avalanche goalie Pat rick Roy said. "The first goal was inside post, the second goal went in off the post, the third went inside post and the fifth goal was a perfect shot inside post. It's frustrating." Indeed, the Avs lost a game in which they outshot the Kings 47-22, despite playing with three top offensive players out of the lineup. Entering the second period with a 3-1 lead, the Avs put 16 shots on Kings goalie Jamie Storr, many of them high-quality chances. At the other end, Roy - coming off a 41-save shutout over the Mighty Ducks - saw seven. Unfortunately for him, most of them came with the Kings on the power play, which the Avs were powerless in stopping all day. NHL scoring leader Zigmund Palffy scored successive goals in the period for the Kings, the last broke a 4-4 tie with 22 seconds left. It came 38 seconds after the Avs' Eric Messier was called for interfering with Palffy. It was the Kings' third power-play goal of the period, and the fifth in two games allowed by the Avs.

Extractions: Denver Post Sports Writer Oct. 15, 2000 - There certainly were games along the trail when he had to make more difficult saves. There certainly were games that were of much more importance. There certainly were games against much tougher opponents. But there will be few games Patrick Roy will remember more than Saturday night's 3-1 Colorado Avalanche victory over the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets at the Pepsi Center. Fifteen years after entering the NHL as a scrawny rookie goalie with the Montreal Canadiens, Roy's career path led to the history-book outpost formerly presided over by just one man. But, after 30 years, the late Terry Sawchuk's all-time victory record of 447 has been duplicated. Against a surprisingly stubborn Blue Jackets squad, Roy equaled Sawchuk's mark with a 14-save performance. After skating a tiny circle for the saluting fans as the game's No. 1 star, Roy joined the even smaller victory circle with Sawchuk. "It's a great feeling for a little boy from Quebec," Roy said. "It was a dream once to be in the NHL, and today it's more than a dream to see myself in this spot."

Extractions: NHL schedule/scoreboard Former Seattle Thunderbird Oleg Saprykin scored two goals, Craig Conroy had a goal and two assists and the Flames routed the Avalanche 7-1. "I can't remember having many two-goal games," Saprykin said. "I was due to break out. This should give us some momentum." Calgary forward Jarome Iginla said, "We're in the running for a playoff spot and it's very close. We knew we had to get a win in Colorado, and it was a game where every single guy showed up. Every line was physical, and our power play was due to break out and it did." It was Colorado's worst regular-season loss since a 7-0 defeat in Phoenix on Nov. 26, 1999, and the Avs' worst home loss since the franchise moved from Quebec to Colorado for the 1995-96 season. Miikka Kiprusoff had 21 saves for the Flames. Colorado's Philippe Sauve stopped 26 of 33 shots.
