Extractions: Flyers' captain has primo game The Associated Press Keith Primeau backed up his challenge and prediction. Primeau had three goals and Michal Handzus scored twice, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 7-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series in Philadelphia. Philadelphia can eliminate the Leafs with a victory in Toronto on Tuesday night. If necessary, Game 7 would be Thursday. The home team has won each game in the series. Primeau, the Flyers' captain, addressed his teammates in a closed-door meeting Saturday. He responded with the best playoff performance of his 14-year career. "He told us he would be great today and to jump on for the ride," Flyers goaltender Sean Burke said. Primeau shared the credit.
Extractions: TORONTO (Ticker) The Toronto Maple Leafs gave up one first-period goal for each key regular who missed the latest renewal of the "Battle of Ontario." Wade Redden scored two goals and set up another as the Ottawa Senators raced to a big early lead and extended their unbeaten streak to a team record-tying 11 games with a 7-1 rout of the undermanned Maple Leafs. Toronto was looking to extend its unbeaten streak to four games but was without captain Mats Sundin, who served a one-game suspension, and Owen Nolan, Alexander Mogilny, Tomas Kaberle and Ed Belfour, who were injured. "We're not a team that makes excuses because our star players were not in the lineup," Maple Leafs right wing Tom Fitzgerald. "It doesn't matter." Without those key players, the already lopsided provincial rivalry tilted in favor of the red-hot Senators, who improved to 17-5-1 in the last 23 meetings. "This is a team that was missing a lot of guns tonight," said Ottawa coach Jacques Martin, whose team climbed within five points of first-place Toronto in the Northeast Division. "It was just one of those games. Whether you lose by one goal or a big margin, it's a loss."
Extractions: OTTAWA (Ticker) The Ottawa Senators lost on a number of fronts in their rematch with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Owen Nolan scored with 31 seconds left in overtime as Toronto overcame a four-goal deficit for a 5-4 triumph over Ottawa, which lost All-Star Marian Hossa to a facial injury early in the contest. Nolan scored the game-winner off a beautiful drop pass by defenseman Tomas Kaberle, who also set up the tying goal with just over five minutes left in regulation. Nolan pounced on the pass and rifled a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that beat Ottawa goaltender Patrick Lalime low to the stick side. "It was a 3-on-2 and Kabby took it wide and I knew he was going to drop it," Nolan said. "It was just a matter of pulling the defenseman far enough away. When I received the pass, I just shot it as hard as I could. I wasn't even looking to pick a spot, just to hit the net and it went in." Defenseman Bryan McCabe, who suffered a broken nose in practice Wednesday, also picked up assists on the Maple Leafs' final two goals and had his first career four-point game.

Extractions: The last seven games have been a sobering wake-up call for the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have scored an average of four goals during that span and still managed to lose three of them and tie another. Thrown away were chances to gain two points from Chicago, Buffalo and most importantly Boston, who is vying with Toronto and Ottawa for top spot in the Eastern Division. During that time, Ed Belfour has been sidelined for all but one game and in his absence back-up net minder Trevor Kidd has had to carry the load. He and Mikael Tellqvist (who played Monday versus Pittsburgh) have given up 27 goals in the six games they have started. While it would be easy to play pin the tail on the goalie as far as the blame game goes here, it's not that simple. Some the goals allowed by Kidd have been very soft, but many were the result of him being left alone to fend for himself. A prime example of this occurred during the Boston game when Aki Berg, for the second time in under a minute, tried to pass the puck across the ice when the play wasn't there. The first time Kidd bailed him out, but the second time Mike Knuble ended up staking the Bruins to a 1-0 lead 32 seconds into the hockey game. What happened the next time Berg was on the ice? He tried the same play yet again and had it picked off by a Bruin forward. Again Kidd had to come to the rescue or it would have been 2-0.
Extractions: Incredible. That's the only way to describe it. Coming off news that can only fall in the 'Now What?' category of Alexander Mogilny's hip surgery and subsequent 10-12 week rehab, the Leafs have put together their best week of hockey this season. After sweeping the Canucks Saturday and Monday, they played three games in four nights on the road and ran the table against Atlanta, Ottawa, and the New York Rangers.
