Extractions: Staff Writer As Binghamton University students start the second half of their 2002-2003 school year, the Senators delve into the second half of their corresponding season. The Sens had a fairly successful first half, but as they emphasize the importance of every game and every point in the standings, they will look to sustain their recent level of play. Here's a look back at the first half of the Binghamton Senators inaugural season, and a look ahead at what to expect as the B-Sens make their playoff run: RECAP OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS: HIGH: Oct. 11, 2002 vs. Bridgeport (5-4 W) - Brian Pothier nets the game-winning goal 47 seconds into overtime to give the Sens their first victory in franchise history in front of a sold-out-crowd. Jason Spezza shows fans what all the hype is about as he tallies a goal and two assists during a four-goal second period. LOW: Oct. 12, 2002 vs. Hartford (5-3 L) - In head coach John Paddock's first game against his former team, his B-Sens suffered a tough loss as they carried a 3-3 game into the third before yielding two third period goals. Goaltender Ray Emery stopped 19 shots in the first period and 35 overall, but couldn't stop the Senators from suffering their first loss of the season.

The Sound Tigers took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of first-period goals as Justin Mapletoft scored his eighth of the season off an assist from Derek Bekar just 52 seconds into the game, and Eric Manlow redirected a shot by Alain Nasreddine for his eighth of the year, with Jeff Hamilton also assisting, at the 7:26 mark. Binghamton rallied to take a 3-2 lead with three second-period goals in a 4:10 span. First, David Hymovitz scored his eighth of the season, shorthanded, at the 8:49 mark off assists from Jody Hull and Andy Hedlund. Then, Julien Vauclair tied the score with his third of the year off assists from Denis Hamel and Serge Payer at 10:24. And finally, Brad Tapper gave the Senators their first lead of the contest with his seventh of the season, on the power-play, at 12:59 off assists from Hamel and Alexandre Giroux. The Sound Tigers have also won seven games in a row. The Sound Tigers opened the scoring with 6:55 left in the first period on the first AHL goal of Graham Belaks career off an assist from Ben Guite. However, Binghamton tied the score at 1-1 1:22 later on the fifth marker of the season by Daniel Corso off assists from Denis Hamel and Alexandre Giroux. The Sound Tigers appeared to take charge of the game with three goals in the first half of the second period. Jeff Hamilton regained the lead at 2-1 with his AHL-leading 14th goal of the season off assists from Mattias Weinhandl and Eric Manlow. Kevin Colley then made it 3-1 with his second goal in as many games, his third of the year, at the 6:23 mark. Colleys goal was unassisted. Rob Collins then increased the lead to 4-1 with his sixth goal of the season at 9:47 on the power play off assists from Manlow and Hamilton. Before I found out about this book, I actually had a similar idea. Except mine would have been more photography than writing. Anyway.....Mandel was able to bring the prospective from the player's standpoint. For a guy who never wrote a book before, he did a fantastic job of making you feel part of the team. I am very jealous of his experience. Anyone who's a baseball fan....this is a must read. Especially after you been to a couple of minor league games to know some of the quaint features he talks about. I've read no greater baseball book. An Honest Account of Life in the Minor Leagues Brett Mandel does an excellent job of portraying a year with the Ogden Raptors of the short-season Pioneer League. This is a well written, easy-to-read account of the ups and downs of life in the low minors. At times it is funny, at other times touching. I found myself pulling for him to get into a few more games than he did, but at least he's had an experience not many of us get. Good work on this book!
