Extractions: BCM Hockey Network (BCMHockey.net) Theo's Big Adventure For many years, Theoren Fleury has been a big name in the NHL. Whether it is for his big play or many antics off the ice, Theo has always somehow gotten the spotlight. Of course, even through his troubled times, Theo has somehow always seemed to find a silver lining in the dark gray cloud that looms over him like failure looms over the next Sly Stallone movie. After checking himself into a substance abuse clinic on his own accord, things with Theo has really been on the downward spiral for him. After a fight with Eric Cairns of the New York Islanders and Sandy McCarthy of the Rangers, Theo did his best chicken impression as he flapped his arms like a chicken to the Islanders bench. However, that was nothing compared to his next act of splendor. December 28 th 2001 was a grand day for the Theo bashing. After being ejected for a game in San Jose, Theo decided to vent his frustration. S.J. Sharkie, the mascot for the San Jose Sharks was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Theo, walking down the corridor, clocked S.J. with a blow to the head. Needless to say, Theo was under the scrutiny of the press and league office. S.J. Sharkie, however, was shocked, but is fine now after months of counseling. Throughout the New Year, Theo was under heavy stress. After being penalized in the second period of the February 5

Extractions: Archives Contacts Friday, December 13, 2002 Sports Sports Column Mike Szwaja Chicago Blackhawks fans were holding their collective breaths Wednesday night because they weren't sure what was going to happen. Would Theo Fleury snap? Would Bryan Trottier, the black-hearted head coach of the New York Rangers, try to exorcise Fleury's demons? I know I was worried. The whole situation was primed for disaster, something Fleury is no stranger to. Fleury was appearing in only his fourth game of the season for the Blackhawks, after his indefinite suspension for violating his NHL aftercare program ended last week. The Rangers are Fleury's old team, and I'm sure his old teammates want nothing but for Fleury to overcome his troubles and live a happy life again. However, the Rangers haven't exactly been angels on the ice this season, so I didn't know what to expect. Head coach Bryan Trottier was suspended for two games earlier this season for instructing his players to start a brawl. This might not be such a big deal in hockey, but there were less than two seconds left and the Rangers were down 6-3. There was no motivational value in Trottier's instruction. Sutter found himself in a favorable situation, most likely, before the game even started. When Fleury first skated onto the ice, fans throughout Madison Square Garden cheered, many holding signs that read something like, "WE MISS YOU, THEO. GOOD LUCK!" (A sign of compassion from New York sports fans, was it really?) Sutter had to like that.
Failed Fleury Experiment - Sports - The Daily Illini Online If Operation theo fleury fails, which appears to be a possibility, the Blackhawksfront office is shame because all it tried to do was improve its hockey team http://www.dailyillini.com/oct02/oct11/sports/stories/sports_column01.shtml
Extractions: Archives Contacts Friday, October 11, 2002 Sports Sports Column Mike Szwaja The Theo Fleury experiment in Chicago is already much worse than anyone could have imagined, and it doesn't look like it will improve any time in the near future. The NHL on Tuesday suspended Fleury indefinitely for what it called "violating his aftercare program." I'm not exactly sure what that means, but it most likely pertains to Fleury's taking part in the NHL Players Association's Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program. He voluntarily enrolled in the program in 2001, during his stint with the New York Rangers. Judging by Tuesday's suspension, Fleury failed to fulfill his obligations to these programs. Consequently, Fleury will not be allowed to return to the ice until he is reevaluated and cleared to play by two doctors. Meanwhile, the Chicago Blackhawks organization sits back and wonders what went wrong. This was supposed to be the ideal situation for Fleury. There was no media pressure to come in and single-handedly win a Stanley Cup, like everyone asked him to do when he arrived in New York. Fleury was to be reunited with Brian Sutter, who coached Fleury for two seasons in Calgary and never had a problem with the winger's attitude. Everyone in the Blackhawks' front office, from GM Mike Smith to owner Bill Wirtz, assured the nay-sayers Chicago was the right place for Fleury because they had previous experience with players who had alcohol problems, most notably Bob Probert in 1995.

Extractions: Those who've known Theoren Fleury ever since he was a squalling infant left on the Calgary Flames' doorstep on New Year's Eve, 1988, on the threshold of fame and wealth and glory, wonder how it's all going to end. Theo Fleury said fight on the ice last season was affected by his fight off it. They worry what direction his life already a Pandora's box of volcanic emotions, unfathomable highs and debilitating lows can possibly take after hockey. Other professional athletes, toting around far, far less personal baggage, often find it difficult, nearly impossible, to cope away from the safety net installed beneath them during their peak performing years. And there is no doubt that the game is what has consumed Theoren Fleury, defined him, for as long as we, as he, can remember. The rink is where he feels the safest, the most at ease. It is where he best expresses himself.

Extractions: There have been whispers around the NHL for some time regarding Theo Fleury and possible problems with substance abuse. It's been one big, unsubstantiated rumor until now. I'm happy that he has at last come clean and gone public with his situation. The timing of this announcement could possibly be a signal that the Rangers finally realize they're out of the playoff race. Whether that's the case or not, there's never a bad time to enter a substance abuse program. As far as the playoffs go, the Rangers were probably done anyway, so losing Theo for the rest of the season isn't going to cause them to miss the playoffs. It would have been akin to climbing Mount Everest without oxygen tanks for the Rangers to get that eighth spot in the East. Regardless, it's a tremendous blow for the organization and will be a struggle for Theo, personally.
