Extractions: Ode to Theo Tuesday - August 13, 2002 He yells at refs, beats up mascots, fights with fans, takes stupid penalties, quits games, sulks, pouts, and at any given moment he could announce a relapse and be gone forever from hockey. But hes also our little boy. And we love him. That was Theo Fleury. I wrote those words about eight months ago. On that night, the Rangers little ball of hate jabbed, dove, whined, clowned, provoked, clawed, and otherwise inspired his team to a furious comeback against the Isles, capped dramatically by his dynamic breakaway goal to snatch the win. And then, with cameras poised to capture his triumphant moment, he wiped the sweat from his brow, flashed his patented semi-psychotic smilerepaired but still haunted by his trademark gapturned towards the hostile Uniondale crowd, raised his middle finger and flipped them all the bird. (Sigh) That was Theo Fleury. And now, as the curtain draws to a close on the three-year Broadway run of the Fleury Circus, the normally collective conscience of Blueshirt faithful seems torn between bitter resentment towards the mighty mite and fond reminiscence. Well miss him but we wont. A contradiction? Sure. But what about Theo Fleury isnt a contradiction? Hes a 56 finesse talent that plays like a 65 power forward. His background and lifestyle make him suited for chair tossing on the Jerry Springer Show, but his honesty and up-front nature would drive Oprah to tears. All the qualities that make him a hockey pariah and a volatile teammate are forged from the same passion that may someday get him into the Hall of Fame. He is distracting and competitive, complicated and dumb, frustrating and captivatingusually all in the first period of any given game. He might be the first celebrity athlete in the history of sports that became more outrageous and unpredictable
Extractions: Hockey Gods Giveth, Taketh, Somewhat Giveth Again Monday - September 30, 2002 OK, so we Rangers fans survived a minor scare when the Hockey Gods caught us smiling just a little too much and decided to send a lightning bolt into Pavel Bure's knee. But we chanted some novenas and made burnt offerings upon the altar of Bobby Orr and, suffice to say, we can all collectively breathe out now. Pavel Bure is fine. He hopes to be ready for the season opener on Wednesday, October 9 in Carolina, and in fact is already riding the stationary bike as part of his rehab. Message recieved, Hockey Gods. We were guilty of the sin of pride. We repent. Cast not ye lightning bolts upon thy battered and bruised head of #88. Amen. Blackburn Shines, Richter...Um...Stays Healthy! Dan Blackburn continues to impress and mature. As previously stated, Blackburn is slated for 30-35 starts, and his preseason play leads me to believe that the coaches won't hesitate to play him in big situations (unlike the previous regime). All this is yet another reason to avoid Mike Richter as a starting goalie. His numbers are below average, and for the first half of the year the Rangers will run a goalie tandem, which should cut into his only decent stat, Total Wins. Draft either of these guys in a late round and keep them both on the benchthey'll do less damage that way. Another Preseason Win (Yawn) Is it just me or does every preseason, no matter who you root for, follow the same pattern? Boring, mistake filled hockey. Disinterested superstars gliding while gritty fringe players fight for jobs. One rookie emerging as the camp superstar, while another much maligned player shows signs of rejuvination. Lindros, Holik, Bure (pre-injury) are showing impressive flashes but nothing sustained. Jamie Lundmark seemingly scores every nighthe looks good but not superstar waste-a-draft-pick-on-him good. Radek Dvorak looked healthy in his first game back; Petr Nedved might be a sleeper steal as the wing on the Bure-Lindros line. Otherwise the last few weeks have been a determined battle for a roster spot between Ted Donato, Dixon Ward, and Rico Fata. Isn't preseason fun?

There was one hell of a battle going on at the E Center Monday evening between Team Canada and the Czech Republic. In fact, this Olympic Final Round matchup looked more like a Stanley Cup Finals game than a wide-open international match. Great goaltending. Great individual offensive exploits. Thundering hits, and a disputed goal even had Wayne Gretzky's blood pressure rising as Canada and the Czechs skated to a pressure-packed 3-3 tie that helped set the table for the next round of the Olympic tournament.

Maybe he's trying to create an "us against the world" mentality for his team.
