Extractions: File photo The Ferraro twins resume their dream of playing together in the NHL as they sign one-year contracts with the Capitals. The Ferraro twins will once again be reunited on the ice this season. The Washington Capitals signed brothers Chris and Peter this week to one-year contracts. It was a significant occasion for Chris, who did not play beyond October last season to be with wife Jennifer during her battle with stomach cancer. Peter played the season in Portland, but his mind was often with his family. "This is just kind of like a do-over," said Chris. "The plan is to try and get back to our lives, which involves me playing hockey and her getting healthy, starting over." The Ferraros played one season at the University of Maine in the 1993 championship season. They have spent the last 10 years splitting time between the AHL and NHL. They were signed last summer to provide depth for the Capitals and become marquee players for the Pirates. Chris was recalled by the Capitals in early October, but within weeks stopped playing for the season. His wife, Jennifer, underwent an aggressive treatment plan that included chemotherapy and surgery in April.

Student-Athlete Handbook Boxscore (.pdf) Boxscore (.html) STORRS, CT (Jan. 31) - The Pioneers Garrett Larson completed a hat trick to lead Sacred Heart to a 6-5 victory over the University of Connecticut mens hockey team at the UConn Ice Arena on Saturday. Two goals and three assists from the Huskies Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) were not enough to overcome the offensive pressure by Sacred Heart, who out-shot UConn 37-33. UConn drops to 5-14-5 overall and 2-9-3 in the Atlantic Hockey Association with the loss, while Sacred Heart improves to 6-14-4 overall and 6-6-2 in the conference. Larson scored early in the first period with a shot from the left side that made it past UConn goaltender Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) on Tomes stick side. The Huskies quickly came up with an answer as B.J. Crum scored less than two minutes later to tie the game. Crums goal with 8:04 elapsed was scored with help from Olsen and Bill Magnuson (Rochdale, Minn.) in a power play situation. The two goals were just the first of seven to be scored in the opening period. Magnusons goal was followed by a Sacred Heart tally from Peter Ferraro, who put the puck in after a shot by Erik Roos bounced off the glass. Olsen kept to tradition for the night, again scoring a goal for UConn less than two minutes following the goal by Ferraro. Larson followed Olsens goal with the Pioneers third of the night in a power play with 3:11 remaining in the first period, but again UConn had an answer. Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) put the puck between the legs of Pioneer goaltender Kevin Lapointe with 2:56 remaining, and the Huskies scored again to end the period up 4-3 with a power play goal by Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.).
