Extractions: May 23, 2004 TAMPA, Fla. - Given a second chance to clinch their first trip to the Stanley Cup finals, the Tampa Bay Lightning redeemed themselves. Ruslan Fedotenko and Fredrik Modin scored and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 21 shots as the Lightning rebounded from a disappointing loss in the Eastern Conference finals and beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in Game 7 on Saturday night. The victory sends Dave Andreychuk and the Lightning into the Cup finals against the Calgary Flames, who won the Western Conference title in six games over San Jose. Game 1 is Tuesday night in Tampa. Andreychuk, in his 22nd season, has played more regular season games (1,597) than any other active player without appearing in the Cup finals. Two other teams he played on - Toronto in 1993 and Colorado in 2000 - lost Game 7 of the conference finals. ''So far, one more step to take,'' the 40-year-old Andreychuk said. ''This team should be very proud of themselves and what they've done.''

Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Salt Lake City Preview: Ukraine's hockey hopefuls On Saturday, February 9, even before they drop the puck at center ice in Ukraine's first preliminary round game versus Belarus in Salt Lake City, there will be a tremendous sense of accomplishment. The 2002 Winter Games will be Ukraine's first ever participation in Olympic hockey competition. Previously, Ukraine had earned its status in the upper echelon of hockey nations by winning the 1998 B-Pool World Championships. Ukraine's head coach, Anatoly Bogdanov, preaches the old Soviet style of hockey, featuring crisp passing, constant cycling of the puck and an overall emphasis on an attacking offense. However, Mr. Bogdanov's theory may not be so easy to transform into practicality due to a chronic lack of troops to realize such a multi-dimensional attack. Between the pipes, Coach Bogdanov must select between Igor Karpenko, once the property of both the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Calgary Flames, and Konstantin Simchuk. Karpenko and Simchuk have many years of tested experience on the North American professional minor league circuits. Karpenko has the additional credit claim of winning two Russian titles while with Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Unfortunately, his career resume is somewhat tainted by his meltdown at the 2001 World Championships, where he stumbled and bumbled to a lofty 5.41 goals against average with a paltry .844 save percentage.

Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Babych wins injury suit Former National Hockey League defenseman Dave Babych was awarded $1.37 million by a jury that determined his playing career was cut short when the Philadelphia Flyers made him play with a broken foot. After only one day of deliberations, the nine-person jury in Atlantic City, N.J., awarded the Ukrainian Babych $1.02 million in lost-earnings and $350,000 for pain and suffering. "I couldn't prove permanent disability, but my foot is not right," Babych said. "Injuries happen in hockey, and we have doctors looking after us for that. You have to trust them with decisions. But those decisions have to be made for you, the patient, not for anyone else." Babych, 41, broke a bone in his left foot on April 8, 1998, and told the team he was too hurt to play in a playoff series. He said the team pressured him to play and gave him injections to numb the pain. He played the series and one more year with the Flyers before finally retiring. Babych claimed the treatment on his foot slowed him down and ended his career prematurely. He sued Comcast-Spectacor, owner of the Flyers, and former team doctor Arthur Bartolozzi for $2.3 million, plus pain and suffering.

Extractions: OTTAWA (Ticker) The Ottawa Senators finally won a close one. Bryan Smolinski collected a goal and an assist and Marian Hossa ended a 10-game goalless drought as the Senators edged the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-2, for their first one-goal win of the season. Ottawa had been 0-10 in games decided by a single goal, including 0-8 at home. "There were a couple guys that didn't want us to score an empty-netter so that we would win a one-goal game and get that monkey off our back," joked Senators center Jason Spezza , who had two assists. Smolinski put the Senators ahead for good, snapping a 1-1 tie 5:24 into the second period. The veteran center has just two goals in his last 13 games, both against the Lightning. Hossa provided a two-goal cushion with 8:54 left in the third period, just under two minutes before Ruslan Fedotenko pulled the Lightning back within 3-2. "I could have had a lot of goals," Hossa said of the drought. "I kept moving and my teammates would give me the puck. I would drive to the net but just couldn't score."
Extractions: TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) Defenseman Chris Phillips scored with a minute left in overtime, giving the Ottawa Senators a wild 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in a battle between two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Following a turnover by defenseman Darryl Sydor in Tampa Bay's zone, Daniel Alfredsson threw a cross-ice pass from the right boards to the left point, where Phillips unleashed a slap shot that beat goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin. "Alfredsson made a great pass, I had a lot of time," Phillips said. " (Bryan) Smolinski was right in front of the net, so it made it really tough for Khabibulin to see it." The teams traded the lead three times - all in the third period. They combined for four goals in the final 3:12 of regulation. "It was nerve-racking," Ottawa defenseman Brian Pothier said. "You never want to give up two goals like we did late in the game. I think we showed a lot of determination to come back and not give up."
Extractions: Philadelphia, PA Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards scored third-period goals to stop a potential Philadelphia rally, as the Tampa Bay Lightning remained unbeaten on the road in the 2004 playoffs with a 4-1 victory over the Flyers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals at the Wachovia Center. Martin St. Louis set up both third-period goals for the Lightning, who bounced back from a 6-2 loss in Game 2 to grab a two games to one lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 4 is scheduled for Saturday in Philadelphia. Cory Stillman and Ruslan Fedotenko also scored for the Lightning, who improved to 5-0 on the road this playoff season. Nikolai Khabibulin made 24 saves in a strong effort after being chased from the Tampa Bay net in Game 2. Keith Primeau scored the lone goal for the Flyers, who lost at home for the first time in seven tries this post-season. Robert Esche stopped 22 shots in defeat. Evgeni Nabokov made 34 saves for his third shutout of the 2004 playoffs, leading the San Jose Sharks to a 3-0 victory over the Calgary Flames in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals at the Saddledome. Alexander Korolyuk finished with two goals and an assist for the Sharks, who bounced back after losing the first two games of the series in San Jose. Vincent Damphousse also scored in the victory. The Flames, who were shut out for the first time this playoff season, still lead the best-of-seven series two games to one. Calgary, which is 7-2 on the road in the post-season, fell to 3-4 on home ice. Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday in Calgary. Miikka Kiprusoff played well in net for the Flames and finished with 21 saves in defeat.
