Extractions: By Paul Harris WINGS STATS NHL STANDINGS Red Wings can't get away from Flames' heat early in series After the pesky Nashville Predators gave Detroit just about everything it could handle in a six-game first-round series, the Flames were presenting an opponent that was more talented, bigger, more physical, more relentless, almost as fast and with better goaltending than the Predators. After Detroit and Calgary split the first two games at Joe Louis Arena, the Flames won Game 3 in Calgary 3-2 as Jarome Iginla got his first goal of the series after being relentlessly hounded by Kirk Maltby, Kris Draper and the defense tandems of Derian Hatcher and Chris Chelios and Nicklas Lidstrom and Mathieu Schneider in Detroit. At least one likely reason for that was the absence of Chris Chelios, who missed the game because of an undisclosed injury after participating in the pre-game skate. The Wings dressed seven defensemen, as Jamie Rivers and Jason Woolley each made his 2004 playoff debut.

Extractions: SportsLine.com wire reports DETROIT The Red Wings keep winning even as they keep losing players. Despite losing two players for at least a month in a span of less than 12 hours, Detroit beat Calgary 2-1 Wednesday night behind Manny Legace's 28 saves. Center Kris Draper partially tore his rotator cuff when he collided with goaltender Curtis Joseph during Wednesday's morning skate. He is expected to miss a month. Defenseman Mathieu Dandenault broke his right foot when he was hit by a shot from Calgary's Robyn Regehr late in the first period. Red Wings coach Dave Lewis said Dandenault will miss four-to-six weeks. The Red Wings already were without defensemen Derian Hatcher (knee), Chris Chelios (shoulder), Jason Woolley (back) and Niklas Kronwall (broken leg) because of injuries. At one point earlier in the season, 10 regulars were out at the same time with injuries. "We've definitely overcome a lot," said defenseman Mathieu Schneider. "That makes us a better team."
Extractions: SportsLine.com wire reports CALGARY, Alberta Mathieu Dandenault rescued the Detroit Red Wings from an 18-second collapse that could've wrecked their season. The defenseman scored his first goal of the postseason midway through the third period as the top-seeded Red Wings beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 Thursday night and evened the second-round playoff series 2-2. Martin Gelinas and Ville Nieminen scored for the Flames 18 seconds apart in the second period to tie the game at 2 before Dandenault got the lead back for the Red Wings. Tomas Holmstrom fired a shot that Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff got a piece of. The puck squirted through his legs and lay in the crease, where Dandenault nudged it over the line to give the Red Wings a 3-2 lead with 9:58 left. Game 5 of the best-of-7 Western Conference semifinals series is Saturday at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena.
