It didn't happen, and the final agreement enabled them to write down some basic principles while guaranteeing the main points of the system (which had worked, despite some inconsistencies which had to be corrected) will remain. These basic principles are precisely what European ice hockey is sorely missing. The IIHF never looked at its foundations, and no one can say for certain if a landslide will take it away soon. You have to look long and hard to see if the principles of the European committee and of the football governing bodies have equivalents in ice hockey. First, there's the issue of players' rights. In this domain, fortunately, we still are far from the "jungle law" which reigns in North America, where (non-star) players can be sold, traded or released easily, and must suffer from a state of permanent competition thirty other skilled players aiming at taking their jobwhich is emphasized by the farm-team system. Nevertheless, many European managers and chairmen envy the North American methods, and players here, for instance low-salaried players from Eastern Europe, are not always well-treated. When the results are disappointing, import players are the most convenient scapegoats to become the first dismissals, and are not often allowed to complain.

Extractions: Article by Jack Wang, KY3 NEWS The Jordan Valley Ice Park will is now home to a junior amateur hockey team called The Springfield Spirit. The club formerly known as The St. Louis Sting has moved here. The Spirit is affiliated with the North American Hockey League , with players ages 16 to 20 years old. That league is a feeder program for players interested in getting scholarships at major colleges. The team has been in St. Louis for five years. We've worked extremely hard to try and be a part of this project here. We thank the city for giving us the opportunity to come down here and be a part of a grass roots program," said Kelly Chase, director of hockey operations for the club. The club should have a positive economic impact on the city. The popularity of public ice skating, added to the home games of The Spirit, will benefit area businesses. Several have noticed more customers lately. It was one of the goals of developing the ice rink. As this development grows, as more of the facilities within the development are put in place, it's just going to have a great effect on everything in the area," said Sonja Chasteen of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

For the second consecutive year, the Little East Conference field hockey championship belongs to Keene State College. Kelly Smith's goal seven minutes and fifty-seven seconds into the first overtime period lifted the Owls to a 1-0 victory over rival Plymouth State College to give KSC the 1999 title in a game played Sunday at Owl Complex. It was the second straight overtime- winner for Smith, the Tournament MVP, who sent KSC into the championship with a game - winner in OT against UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday. The winning goal, Smith's 16th of the season, was set up by a lead pass from Melissa Harnch-Smith. "We had a break-away and Melissa made a nice pass to me," said Smith, a junior forward from Lisbon, N.H. "I was open and I hit it hard and fortunately it went in." "After yesterday's game, I was pretty tired, but I wanted to find away to be in the play to get us the win," she said. "It was very appropriate that Kelly got the winner," said KSC coach Amy Watson. "She was all over the field today." The top seed in the Tournament, Keene State had all it could handle in the early going from the Panthers, who tested Owl goalie Lindsay Hamilton on several occasions. Megan Fournier was stopped on a pair of corner opportunities and Ang Grady had a shot from the right side that just missed the far post. Plymouth adapted well to playing on KSC's turf field. "Our style of play is conducive to turf. We're happy to play on it." said PSC coach Abby Burbank, whose team goes to 7-11. "It was a great championship game. Both teams played well throughout the game and that was great to see." "You put these two teams on the field and it doesn't matter what the records are, you're going to get a great game," added Watson. The statistics indicated the closeness of the game. Plymouth had a slim 12-11 advantage on shots and had a 15 to 10 advantage in penalty corners. Both goalies came up with big saves throughout the game. Hamilton had nine saves for KSC while Martha Dennery, the Panther's goalie, finished with five saves. Keene State (14-6) will now await word on a possible ECAC Tournament berth. "Winning this will help us, "Watson said. "There are a lot of other teams sitting out there in the same situation. We'll see where we end up."
