Extractions: Newcomers prepare to shine Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday February 05, 2000 07:36 PM Petr Buzek said it is "like a dream" participating in the NHL All-Star game. Kellie Landis/Allsport TORONTO (AP) Scott Gomez and Petr Buzek traveled different paths to become NHL All-Stars. On Sunday, they will share the distinction of being the first rookies in the All-Star Game since Daniel Alfredsson in 1996. That's where the similarities end. Gomez, 20, is the leading scorer on the New Jersey Devils the NHL's top team with 46 points. Even with that on his resume, he was awed as he dressed for practice with the rest of his North American teammates. "It's unbelievable, it's hard to explain," Gomez said. "I'm sitting next to Mark Messier and I had to pinch myself a couple of times to see if I was awake." The nervousness didn't go away as he took the ice, in front of a capacity crwod at the Air Canada Centre, to practice with some of his heroes. "It's a little different," Gomez said of the atmosphere. "I don't usually get nervous, but when a guy like Messier is passing the puck, I got a little nervous."
Extractions: Notebook Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday February 05, 2000 06:14 PM Rookie Petr Buzek has five goals and nine assists for the expansion Atlanta Thrashers. Kellie Landis/Allsport By David Vecsey, CNNSI.com TORONTO A low-drafted rookie playing defense for an expansion team? Hey, Petr Buzek isn't going to apologize for being in the All-Star Game. In fact, he may deserve it more than most. Critics say the International Showdown lends itself to unknown European players receiving bids to the big game. Advocates might just as well point to Buzek, who has five goals and nine assists for Atlanta, as a reason to open the game to more up-and-comers. Four and a half years ago, not even a month before he was to enter the NHL draft, Buzek was driving home from a game in the Czech Republic when he fell asleep at the wheel and took his car headlong into a tree. He was unconscious for two days. When he woke, hockey wasn't even a question. They weren't sure he was going to live. "I was in bed and I couldn't move," he recalled Saturday. "I was basically fighting my life."

When I began to play the toughest position in the world a couple of years ago, I needed a superior goaltender to model myself after and learn from. Brodeur had caught my eye even when I was a defenceman.

Extractions: Related Stories Latino Legends in Sports News Latino Hockey player, Scott Gomez makes the All-Star Team! Remember this name, Scott Gomez . That name will be in many sports trivia questions for many years to come. The reason why is because Gomez is the first Hispanic to ever play in the NHL. Gomez is a Native of Alaska, but his father, Carlos, is Mexican-American and mother, Dalia is from Colombia. Besides his heritage, which automatically makes him a stand out and a pioneer of the sport, the modest Gomez is a great hockey player. In fact, he was just nominated to participate in the NHL's All-Star Game on February 6th. Gomez, a rookie in the league of only 19 years old, was named as a reserve to the North American Team that will skate against the World Team in Toronto. "I'm definitely in shock," Gomez said from his NJ apartment. This game is something you grow up watching all your life, and to be part of it is kind of mind-boggling. Gomez will play on the same team with the likes of NHL superstars Ray Bourque, Mark Messier and Steve Yzerman.

Extractions: February 26th, 2002 As a Canadian hockey fan I can sit back and make comments about other sports without hesitation. The NFL should move to a one-foot inbound rule like the CFL. Major League Baseball should use computer chips in base bags to avoid the use of umpires on the field getting in the way of line drive hits, or double plays. Makes sense to me. Ask a major NFL or baseball fan their opinion, however, and you may get a reaction similar to Don Cherry's when the topic of Olympic vs. NHL hockey rears it's head. LEAVE IT ALONE! To me, Grapes has a point. Coming off a very emotional, action packed tournament many a writer or radio host have been quick to jump on the Olympic hockey bandwagon. The argument goes that a larger rink, no center red line, and a more open game leads to a much more exciting brand of hockey. What they forget is the quality of player. Picture if you will a big match-up at the Saddledome this Saturday night. The Calgary Flames break all NHL precedents by taking advantage of their retractable ice surface to rip out 1500 seats and play the Predators on Olympic sized ice. The Calgary ice maverick's melt the ice and erase the centerline, making the stage set for some of the most exciting hockey ever to be played in Calgary!
