Extractions: Ray Bourque: The Captain The quintessential Ray Bourque moment? Perhaps it was on Phil Esposito night when he presented Esposito with his No. 7 jersey. Maybe it was leading Normand Leveille onto the Boston Garden ice at the old barn's "Last Hurrah." Beating the Canadiens in the playoffs in 1988 has to be up there, as do the countless fist pumps that came every time he scored a goal, nearly 400 of them. Over the course of a 22-year career in the National Hockey League, Raymond Bourque became one of the best defensemen the game has ever seen and one of the greatest Bruins of all time, retiring in 2001 as the club's all-time leader in games (1,518), assists (1,111) and points (1,506). His 395 goals are fourth on the Bruins' all-time list and are the most by any defenseman to ever wear the "B" on his sweater. Ray Bourque celebrating his First NHL goal. The Bruins drafted Bourque with their first pick, eighth overall, in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. An 18-year-old rookie, Bourque made the club out of training camp that fall and never even had as much as a cup of coffee in the minors. He proved immediately why, scoring his first NHL goal and adding his first NHL assist in his first game on Oct. 11 against Winnipeg. That was just the beginning of a season when Bourque finished an astounding plus-52 with 65 points, and became the first non-goaltender in the history of the National Hockey League to win the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie. Bourque also started what would become a tradition over the years, earning a First Team NHL All-Star berth, the first of 18 First or Second Team All-Star selections during his two decades with the Bruins.

Extractions: Amazon.com Raymond (Ray) Bourque was born on December 28, 1960 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Growing up, Bourque was a Montreal Canadiens fan and played his minor hockey within the Quebec system with the Sorel and Verdun Eperviers of the QMJHL. Bourque was the first round choice, eight overall, of the Boston Bruins in 1979 and joined the NHL that fall. In his rookie season he won the Calder Trophy as the best first year player, scoring 65 points in 80 games. Through out the 1980s Bourque would continue to grow as an NHL defenseman and anchor the Bruins defense for twenty years. Playing in Boston, he was always overshadowed by the Boston Celtics and compared to Bobby Orr, probably the best defenseman to have every played hockey. Bourque broke Gordie Howe's record for most All-Star nominations and won the Norris trophy as the league's best defenseman five times. He also played for Team Canada in three Canada Cup tournaments; 1981, 1984, and 1987. In his twenty year stint with the Boston Bruins, Ray Bourque led the team in scoring on five different occasions and became one of three NHL defensemen to have scored over 300 goals. He became only the sixth defenseman in NHL history to score 30 goals in a season, accomplishing the feat in the 1983-84 season and became only the fifth player to notch 1,000 assists in the 1997-98 season. Bourque became captain of the Bruins in 1988-89 and led the Bruins to two Stanley Cup final appearances in 1988 and 1990. Even though the Boston team was always very competitive and near the top of league standings, the Stanley Cup Championship would elude Bourque when he was in Boston. In March 2000, the perrenial Bruin was traded along with Dave Andreychuck to the Colorado Avalanche for Brian Rolston, prospects Martin Grenier and Samual Pahlsson, and Colorado's first round choice in either the 2000 or 2001 Entry Draft.

Extractions: Defense, Shoots Left, 5'11", 219 lbs. Born - Montreal, Quebec, December 28, 1960. Boston's 1st choice, 8th overall, in 1979 Entry Draft. It was a surprise to all hockey fans when Raymond Bourque, after spending 20 illustrious seasons with the Boston Bruins, was dealt to the Colorado Avalanche in March, 2000 as the Bruins decided to pay back Bourque's years of dedication with an opportunity to win the Stanley Cup. Bourque has proven himself to be one of the steadiest and most reliable defenseman ever to skate in the NHL. The mystique began in his rookie season of 1979-80 when he captured the Calder Trophy and a berth on the First Team NHL All-Star squad. The five time Norris Trophy winner reigns as the Bruins' all time leader in assists and points and broke Bobby Orr's Bruins record for most goals by a defenseman in 1992 with number 265! Bourque later joined Denis Potvin and Paul Coffey as the only defensemen to notch 300 goals in a career! Bourque also became the fifth NHL player to record 1000 assists, joining such greats as Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Marcel Dionne, and again Paul Coffey. Bourque, who has Captained the Bruins since the 1988-89 season, performed one of the classiest acts in hockey history on the night of December 3, 1988. On that night, Bourque and his Boston Bruins honored the legendary Phil Esposito by retiring his number 7. Bourque, who had been wearing Esposito's 7, removed his jersey at center ice, presented it to Esposito and was found to have worn underneath his original jersey, a new sweater with the number 77 - the number we now identify Bourque with!
Extractions: Wednesday Roundup Click here for more on this story Posted: Thursday June 15, 2000 12:25 PM Ray Bourque had eight goals and six assists in 14 games with the Avalanche. Brian Bahr/Allsport DENVER (AP) Raymond Bourque, who helped fuel the Avalanche's failed bid for the Stanley Cup, signed a contract Wednesday that will keep him with Colorado for another year. The 39-year-old Bourque could have tried his luck on the free-agent market beginning July 1, but chose to stay with Colorado. The contract was for one year plus an option, but other details were not disclosed. "The Avalanche is a very competitive and contending club and I am looking forward to continue playing in a great hockey environment," Bourque said. "Ray is an impact player for our hockey club and every one of our players will be excited to know that he will be back with us," said general manager Pierre Lacroix. "Ray is in tremendous shape and is as strong as he has ever been."

Bourque's quest for his first Stanley Cup ring was the story of the 2001 playoffs for most of the hockey world. Don't count Ken Daneyko in that group. The veteran defenseman and his New Jersey Devils teammates had no interest in seeing Bourque cap his Hall of Fame career by winning the Cup that had eluded him for more than two decades. As the defending champions, they were more interested in making their own kind of history. "We'd already won two Cups (the first in 1995), and a win would have put us in the class of a dynasty," says Daneyko, whose tenure with the Devils dated to 1983-84, their second season in New Jersey. "Ray Bourque winning the Cup wasn't my story line. I wanted us to win and become a dynasty."

As a player, he has been on the ice during five U.S. presidential administrations. He has seen the rise and fall of disco music. He once played against the city of Denver's first NHL team, the Colorado Rockies, and now plays for its second, the Avalanche. In his rookie year, 1979, the best-selling new car in America was the Ford Fairmont. They don't even make those anymore. But Bourque keeps right on motoring along. Not even the best french wines age as well as the 40-year-old defenseman has. At his advanced age, Bourque remains among the best at his position in the NHL. Not only was he among the leaders in scoring for defenseman entering the final two months of the season, but Bourque was the Avalanche leader in ice time, averaging close to 27 minutes a game.
