Extractions: It reports that there's going to be a Vladislav Tretiak bobblehead doll. As a huge Tretiak fan, I find that very exciting. I can't imagine the great Soviet goalie is thrilled to have his head blown up to the size of his body, but what can you do? If you're a famous athlete, sooner or latter your head is going to bobble. He's always been miserable wherever he played, so I just kind of assumed he'd never retire.

Extractions: Randy On Whether Berard Should Play Bryan Berard will soon be returning to a NHL arena near you! A year and a half ago that seemed an impossibility. You'll recall that it was in March of 2000 in a regular season game in Ottawa the career of the Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman seemingly came to a horrible end. Following through on a shot, the stick of Ottawa Senators forward Marion Hossa inadvertently clipped Berard in the right eye. The consensus was that Bernard's days as a NHLer were over. Doctors agreed. After 7 eye operations Berard announced his retirement and accepted a 6.5 million-dollar insurance settlement. But clearly Berard never gave up the dream of someday returning to play the sport he so loved in the world's best league. He stayed in shape. In fact the 24-year-old Berard pushed himself to new limits. His eye might have been damaged but the rest of him was better than ever before. Then along came the talent starved NY Rangers. They began talking to Berard and his agent Tom Laidlaw about a possible return to the NHL. The obvious problem was the sight that remained in Berard's right eye. It is 20/600. That means he sees something at 20 feet that a person with normal sight see's at 600 feet. A NHL bylaw requires 20/400 eyesight or better. A special contact lens may improve Berard's vision slightly but probably not to the 20/400 threshold.
