Extractions: The insurance would kick in, but it looked like a young man in twenties had his career ended. This young man didn't have the word "quit" in his vocabulary though. He fought back and got clearance from the NHL medical people and returned to the NHL. He has toiled with Maple Leafs, Rangers and Bruins since, and now he lands in Chicago.

Extractions: Saving face: doctors lobby to protect hockey players CMAJ See also: For 18 years, Dr. Dennis Pitt has been trying hard to convince players in his own hockey league to wear masks that provide full facial protection. Realizing the difficulties he faced convincing individual players, Pitt changed his game plan. Since January he's been working with the 500-member Ottawa Academy of Medicine, the local branch society of the Ontario Medical Association, in an attempt to gather national support to encourage major hockey bodies like the NHL to make full facial protection mandatory. The issue gained national attention last March when Toronto Maple Leaf defenceman Bryan Berard, 23, was seriously hurt in one eye by an errant stick. The injury ended his career. Toronto Maple Leaf player Bryan Berard, shown here after being injured, lost most sight in one eye when hit by a hockey stick last March. (Photo courtesy of Canapress) "We're very pleased with the response so far," says Pitt. The Canadian Ophthalmological Society and Canadian Dental Association will be supporting the campaign, and the issue was discussed at a meeting of NHL team physicians in July. The Canadian Standards Association says more eye injuries are sustained in hockey than in any other sport. Between 1972 and 1997, 1860 such injuries were recorded, with 298 resulting in at least partial blindness.

Varsity Sports -- I Can See Clearly Now with A Visor U of T medical graduate Dr. Rob Devenyi, who examined the Leafs bryan berard, hopes mandatory implementation of visors in pro hockey will now come about. http://www.varsity.utoronto.ca/archives/120/mar27/sports/ican.html
Extractions: Whether youre a hockey fan or not, the news last week that Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Bryan Berard successfully had the retina of his right eye reattached is obviously positive. Berard now has a better chance than he did a couple of weeks ago of simply regaining some sight out of his eye playing hockey again is likely the furthest thing on his (or his familys) mind. Whether the outcome of Berards surgery on Mar. 21 in New York had been successful or not, it would still not have changed the opinion of Dr. Rob Devenyi that all players in the National Hockey League (NHL) should be mandated to wear a visor. Devenyi is a graduate of U of Ts faculty of medicine (1983), and is currently on staff at the faculty. Hes also director of retinal services at Toronto Hospital, Western Division, and has been the ophthalmologist for the Maple Leafs for approximately the last four years. Devenyi was the first to examine Berard, on Mar. 14, upon the latters return to Toronto from an Ottawa hospital on the previous weekend.

And why wouldn't Berard smile? Life hasn't always been too kind to the gifted 26-year-old defenseman from Woonsocket, Rhode Island. "What a relief," Berard says afterward, taking a deep breath. "These last few months haven't exactly been fun. It hurts when the game you love so much is kind of taken away from you." Berard signed as a free agent with the Blackhawks on Halloween, after he had been cut loose by the Boston Bruins in the summer following an arbitration walkaway by the Bruins. In the meantime, Berard sat in Rhode Island, trying to stay in shape and find a team. A real conundrum, when you consider that Berard led the Bruins' defensemen in scoring last season with 10 goal and 28 assists, his best season since breaking into the NHL with 48 and 46 points, respectively, with the New York Islanders in 1996-97 and '97-98.
Eye Information - The Canadian Association Of Optometrists (OTTAWA) In the wake of Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman bryan berard s severe eye againfor mandatory eye protection for all National hockey League players. http://www.opto.ca/eyeinfo/news/nhl.asp
Extractions: Optometrists renew the call for mandatory NHL eye protection (OTTAWA) In the wake of Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Bryan Berard's severe eye injury at the Corel Centre in Ottawa on Saturday night, the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) is calling again for mandatory eye protection for all National Hockey League players. Dr Pasq Marcantonio, president of the 3,000-member national optometric association, reacted strongly to news of the high-stick accident involving Senators' right-winger Marian Hossa. "Enough is enough," said Dr Marcantonio. "How many more young hockey players have to sustain eye injuries before the NHL decides to do something about this?" Berard's injuries are suspected to involve a broken orbital bone, a cut to his eyeball, and potentially even a detached retina. "Depending on the severity of these injuries, this could mean infection, damage to ocular muscles, a loss of depth perception and even permanent vision loss," says Dr Marcantonio. "Given the role vision plays in hockey, injuries like these may very well amount to the end of a player's career." The Canadian Association of Optometrists has advocated the mandatory use of eye shields at all levels of play for years and, in the wake of this latest injury, the association insists that the time has come for the NHL to make the safety issue its greatest priority.

Drafted first overall in 1995 by the Ottawa Senators, Berard fulfilled the inevitably lofty expectations that come with that selection. After coming to the New York Islanders in a trade, he captured the Calder Trophy in 1996-97. That season he recorded 48 points while playing all 82 games. Then came March 11, 2000, the day the blueliner suffered a devastating eye injury that nearly blinded him. Berard silenced the doubters and stunned the hockey world by returning and practically picking up where he left off. In 1999-2000, prior to the injury, he totaled 30 points with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 2001-02, the year of his return, Berard recorded 23 points with the New York Rangers.
