Extractions: BOSTON (AP) The Boston Bruins are breaking new ground in their contract negotiations with defenseman Bryan Berard The Bruins allowed Berard to become a free agent Tuesday by rejecting the $2.51 million salary set by an arbitrator last week. But they're hoping that he'll return to the team anyway at a 20 percent discount about $2 million a year. "We do like Bryan. Hopefully, he'll come back to us," general manager Mike O'Connell said. "But at this stage in his development, coming back from a serious injury, we weren't prepared to go back to that [$2.5 million] level." The collective bargaining agreement that ended the NHL's 1994-95 lockout allows teams to reject a limited number of arbitrator's decisions. The "walkaway" rights have only been used once before when the Bruins opted out of the $2.8 awarded to Dmitri Khristich in 1998 and allowed him to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent. The Bruins' strategy in this case was a little different, because the number they walked away from was the very one they submitted.

Extractions: With the aid of a specially fitted contact lense, it would increase his sight to the point where he would pass the league's minimum vision requirement. The sources also indicate that up to 9 teams are interested in obtaining him, including the Maple Leafs. Can anyone shed some light on this? I thought that the Leafs still held his rights? I never heard anything to the effect that the Leafs released him after he retired. Anyway, I would love to see #34 back with the Buds, from the last 3 exibition games, it looks like they need him.

Berard Sustains Serious Eye Injury damage to the eye, said Casey Vanden Heuvel, the Leafs director of hockey operations berard steammates were shaken by the news bryan was very scared and upset http://www.hockey-stats.com/news/A-2000-03-12.shtml
Extractions: HOME NEWS ONTARIO (March 12, 2000) - Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Bryan Berard sustained a serious eye injury, that will require surgery, after he was struck with a high stick Saturday night that left him bleeding on the ice. Berard, who was kept overnight in the hospital, was injured in the second period of the Maple Leafs' 4-2 victory over Ottawa, when he was clipped under the right eye by the stick of Senators forward Marian Hossa "There is going to be an operation on his eye," coach and general manager Pat Quinn said. "This is serious." Berard, in his fourth NHL season, crumpled to his knees with his forehead on the ice as a pool of blood grew until medical personnel could reach him. "The stick caught him under the right eye and there is some fear there is damage to the eye," said Casey Vanden Heuvel, the Leafs' director of hockey operations. "It took a considerable amount of time to get the bleeding under control." Another club official said it was suspected Berard suffered a damaged orbital bone.
Extractions: What did I expect from Berard, and what were the results? Well, I expected Berard to play short shifts, low ice time, and to show how well he can play in the defensive zone. It was his first game back, so I did expect Berard to make some mistakes, but he did not make one. Berard played a very simple and hard working game. To tell you the truth, and call me blind if I'm wrong, but when Berard was on camera, he looked normal to me. His right eye did not look weird at all. Berard is 24 years old, is about 6'2 ft, and weighs around 220 lbs. Having that on a roster just adds size and makes the team younger. So how did Berard perform? I must say he played very well. Obviously, before I receive some criticism saying "Oh, it's only one game.", Berard still needs to show how much time he can play, if he can play on a PK and PP, and if he can still make the team. As of now, judging by that game, Berard makes the team. He made very sharp passes across the ice. He used a lot of strength when checking a player. He played a simple game. At one point, Berard was facing a 2 on 1 and he made the right play by blocking a saucer pass with his stick layed down. That was a play that top defensemen with two perfect eyes can make a mistake on.
