Extractions: SportsLine.com wire reports NEW YORK Even at 42, Mark Messier still has a flair for dramatics. Messier enjoyed being tied with Gordie Howe on the NHL points list for two periods before he passed Mr. Hockey in the closing seconds of the New York Rangers' 3-0 victory Tuesday night over the Dallas Stars The Rangers captain scored the first and last goals to give him 1,851 points and set off an on-ice hug with his teammates. "I always find it hard to celebrate something like that, but what I have to realize is it's a tremendous honor for all the people I played with and the game of hockey itself," Messier said. Messier found an empty net for a shorthanded goal with 4.7 seconds left. "Well, I wasn't really thinking about that point right there," Messier said. "Obviously if the opportunity presented itself, I wasn't going to pass it up." It was just like the night in 1994 when he guaranteed New York would beat New Jersey in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals and stay alive in route to the Rangers' first Stanley Cup in 54 years.

Extractions: OTTAWA (Ticker) The Ottawa Senators turned Jaromir Jagr's debut with the New York Rangers from inauspicious to ignominious. Bryan Smolinski and defenseman Zdeno Chara each scored twice and the Senators held Jagr to one shot in his first game for the Rangers, who absorbed a 9-1 loss, their worst in more than a decade. Jagr, a five-time NHL scoring champion and the 1999 Hart Trophy winner, was acquired Friday from the Washington Capitals. He wasted no time making his debut for New York, which is trying to end a six-year playoff drought. But Jagr made little impact as the Rangers suffered their fourth straight loss and had their winless streak extended to a season-high six games (0-4-2). It was their most lopsided loss since a 10-2 setback to Quebec on March 6, 1993. "That was awful," Rangers center Eric Lindros said. "We were outskated, we didn't think, we were awful. We have no excuses. We've been talking about excuses for a long time around here, we're just not coming to play." Playing on a line with fellow Czechs Petr Nedved and Jan Hlavac, Jagr got off his only shot on a second-period power play. He had a chance to score early in the third period, but Ottawa's

Coming off news that can only fall in the 'Now What?' category of Alexander Mogilny's hip surgery and subsequent 10-12 week rehab, the Leafs have put together their best week of hockey this season. After sweeping the Canucks Saturday and Monday, they played three games in four nights on the road and ran the table against Atlanta, Ottawa, and the New York Rangers.

No Eric Lindros and a barely-up-to-speed Brian Leetch for the wobbly Rangers back in November. No Scott Stevens or Jamie Langenbrunner for the stumbling Devils last night. But the Rangers have to snatch signs of progress wherever they find them - particularly against the Devils. And last night's 3-3 Garden tie with the defending champs, forged by a Matthew Barnaby goal with 1:49 left in regulation, fit the description. If, for no other reason than it was immeasurably better from the Rangers' perspective than the 5-0 humiliation the Devils had handed them Nov. 15 at the Meadowlands. "Yeah, we got killed in the November game," Rangers defenseman Tom Poti said. "We didn't belong on the same ice with them in November. They pretty much ruled every aspect of every second of that game. . . . I think it shows that we can (now) play with the defending Stanley Cup champs. We can play with anybody." Playing the Devils, of course, requires a specific set of skills. Patience and discipline are foremost among them.

Extractions: NEW YORK (Ticker) The New York Rangers waited until the third period before their latest collapse against the Ottawa Senators. Defenseman Zdeno Chara and Josh Langfeld scored in a 42-second span of the third period as the Senators added to the Rangers' woes with a 4-1 victory. Martin Havlat and Bryan Smolinski also scored for the Senators, who extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 13-5-2-1 in the last 21 contests. Ottawa handed New York its worst loss in more than a decade on January 24 at the Corel Centre, scoring four times in the first period en route to a 9-1 romp. The Rangers were able to keep things close for two periods in this one, but were thoroughly outplayed in the third and fell to 3-11-2 in their last 16 games. "You have (the 9-1 game) in the back of your mind. Every time you win a game with big score on the board, you make sure the next time you play them you are ready to play," Chara said. "They worked hard, you could see that. They were battling and they were physical." Chara broke a 1-1 tie with 12:49 remaining when his wrist shot from just outside the right faceoff circle got past Jussi Markkanen. Smolinski crashed into the goaltender before the puck went in.
