Aubin stopped 90 of 92 shots in three games to help the Penguins secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2001. Aubin made 28 saves on Wednesday as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeated Cincinnati, 2-1. He then faced South Division champion Norfolk on successive nights, posting a 23-save shutout in a 2-0 win on Friday, and turning aside 39 of 40 shots in Saturday's 1-1 tie. For the week, Aubin was 2-0-1 with a 0.65 goals against average, a .978 save percentage and his third shutout of the season. In recognition of his achievement, Aubin will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Pocono Pirates Amateur Youth Hockey Club in Aubin's name.

Extractions: Messier tossed, Pens ice Rangers THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PITTSBURGH - Not surprisingly, the Rangers finished yesterday's game with a loss. Shockingly, they also finished without their captain. The Rangers' winless streak reached six games yesterday (0-3-0-3) with a 4-3 overtime loss in a game marked by bad penalties and the ejection of Mark Messier. Jaromir Jagr was in the penalty box for roughing Dan Focht late in the third period, leading to Dick Tarnstrom's game-tying power-play goal with 1:15 to play in regulation. Boris Mironov's hooking penalty away from the play with 30 seconds left in overtime led to Aleksey Morozov's 15th goal of the season. "We made some careless mistakes and took some selfish penalties, and that can't happen," the Rangers' Dan Lacouture said. "We came out strong in the third period and battled back, and then we took penalties at the end that obviously cost us the game." Messier was ejected at 6:13 of the second period for spearing defenseman Martin Strbak in front of the Pittsburgh net during a Rangers power play. Moments earlier, Strbak had cross-checked Messier near the bottom of the left circle in the Penguins' zone. Messier refused comment on the play, but Strbak said he was surprised to get a stick from Messier in the abdomen.

Extractions: Feb. 20, 2001 - PITTSBURGH - It was billed as a potential party for the goal-scorers, with invitations sent out to some of the best in the NHL. But apparently, Peter Forsberg and Milan Hejduk were the only players to RSVP. Conspicuous by their absence were Pittsburgh Penguins superstars Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr, who ceded the national television spotlight to the Avs' Forsberg, Hejduk and, yes, Ville Nieminen in Colora do's 5-1 rout of the Penguins at Mellon Arena on Monday. Any time a guy such as Nieminen scores twice as many points as Lemieux and Jagr combined, you know it was probably a good day against the Penguins. And so it was for the Avs, who got two goals apiece from Forsberg and Nieminen, and one from Hejduk, to happily end a four-game road trip. There's just something about the Steel City that agrees with the Avalanche. Normally one of the tougher buildings in the league for opponents to win, the Avs are a spiffy 5-0-1 here since moving to Denver in 1995. Surprisingly, despite the return of Super Mario himself, this was the easiest win of them all. AVS 5, PENGUINS 1 "Well, it's still tough to play against him," said Forsberg, who outshone everybody with two assists to go along with his two goals, giving him seven points in the past two games. "He sees the ice so well. He sees over everybody's heads, he's so tall. So you've really got to make sure you have the other guys covered well."
