Extractions: winning goal. June 11, 2000. Jason began his Junior career in 1989/90 with Stayner in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, moving over Lindsay the next season. In 1991/92 he moved up to the Ontario Hockey League where he played for the Oshawa Generals. In his second year with the Generals, Arnie (a.k.a. Jason) put up some impressive numbers with 41 goals, 57 assists for a 98 point total in 56 games, an increase of 74 points from his modest 24 point rookie season with the Gens. As his point total increased so did his penalty minutes. For those of you unfamiliar with the game of hockey, the ability to score plus a good number of penalty minutes is a good thing. Putting points on the board and being a physical presence in a very physical game made him a coveted prospect in the 1993 NHL draft. Jason was drafted 7th overall by the Edmonton Oilers. As a rookie in the 93-94 season, he had 33 goals and 35 assists to place second among all rookie scorers and finishing second in Calder Cup voting for Rookie of the year. During that season, Jason broke the single-season Oilers rookie goal scoring record held previously by Jari Kurri and was named to the NHL all-rookie team. During his sophomore year his numbers dipped a bit due to an injury shortened season. The next two years Arnie rebounded nicely rivaling his great rookie season.

Extractions: Jason Arnott Day - July 29, 2000 It was a day few Wasaga Beach residents and visitors will forget. NHL hockey star and local lad, Jason Arnott brought home the Stanley Cup for a parade and celebration to the delight of thousands of fans. The day began with a exciting parade including pipe bands, colour guards, minor hockey teams, fire engines, a jazz band and appropriately, a snow spewing Zamboni. And of course at the end of the very long parade was Mr. Arnott himself wearing his Devil's team sweater. And of course, the second star of the day; The Stanley Cup! click on any image to enlarge - The parade started at Wasaga Stars Arena, winding it's way down to Main St. and around to Beach Drive for a final approach to the Dard. Once at the Dardanella, the festivities moved to the upper deck with Town Crier Roy Wilson proclaiming July 29, 2000 as "Jason Arnott Day". Mayor Borthwick proceeded with a fine speech congratulating Mr. Arnott on his achievement. The Mayor pointed out that Jason's whole family have played an integral role in the the community and that Jason had grown up, gone to school and played minor hockey in Wasaga Beach. The Mayor went on to say how proud and pleased we all were to honour him this day. Arnott received a number of gifts and presentations from both the Mayor and several Wasaga Beach minor hockey officials. Jason's # 9 sweater from his days in the Wasaga Beach minor hockey system was retired and will be flown from the rafters of the Wasaga Stars Arena. Having your jersey number retired is a great honour and I'm sure Jason appreciated this gesture. Mayor Borthwick also officially changed Arnott's home address to # 25, his sweater number with the Devils.

They did it also for their fallen linemate, Petr Sykora. Arnott took a pass from Elias and snapped a shot past Ed Belfour at 8:20 of the second overtime on Saturday night to give the Devils a 2-1 win over the Dallas Stars and their second Cup since 1995. Having the two combine for the game winner was so appropriate because Sykora wasn't there to see it. With 7:52 left in the first period, Sykora was crunched by Dallas defenseman Derian Hatcher after flipping a shot at Belfour, and he fell back to the ice on his back, his hands held out as if frozen. Trainers and doctors immediately came out to attend him as players from both teams watched with concern.

When he one-timed a pass behind the Dallas Stars' Ed Belfour in Game 6 of the 2000 Finals, Arnott secured his place in hockey history. That goal, scored in the second overtime of Game 6, lifted the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup. Of course, that was only one of 20 points the big center amassed that playoff year, tying him for the team lead. The Edmonton Oilers' seventh pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Arnott recorded 68 points his first season to garner a selection on the All-Rookie Team. He represented the Oilers at the 1997 NHL All-Star Game before being dealt to the Devils the next year. Ironically, the Devils traded him to the Stars at the 2002 trade deadline. But thanks to a trade to New Jersey, Arnott not only rediscovered himself as a player, but as a person, too. Arnott was the seventh player selected in the 1993 Entry Draft and enjoyed a strong rookie season in 1993-94 with the Oilers, scoring 33 goals and 35 assists in 78 games. He finished as the runner-up to Devils goalie Martin Brodeur in Calder Trophy balloting that season. The sky was the limit for the big, rugged center.

How about a four-point night against the defending Stanley Cup champs in the Cup opener. Larry Robinson put the 'A' on his sweater and told him to grow up. That's what happened here. "He became a man this year," said Robinson yesterday on the eve of the Stanley Cup final between the New Jersey Devils and the Dallas Stars. "Basically, Jason Arnott finally matured.
