Extractions: Juvenile Justifications for Irrational Behaviors Main December 01, 2003 hockey, the way it ought it to be I had occasion to catch a Canes game while hanging out in a Luxury Suite @ the RBC Center , thanks to the hospitality of Springboard Managed Hosting . Parked in the VIP section , which was awesome. I don't think I'll ever go to another game that isn't in one of those suites. It's just the way Hockey games should be seen. Great view . Two TVs, so you can catch the closed circuit or the televised game, plus whatever else may be happening (we watched the Gators get jobbed during intermissions.) Snapped a pic of my brother relaxing in the lounge area: The game was pretty good. I was pleasantly suprised to see Brian Holzinger was playing for Pittsburgh. Brian won the Hobey Baker award while I was going to BGSU, and I was lucky enough to have watched him play for a few years in college. He played well, scored a goal and made some plays on the PP units. My favorite Canes player, Radim Vrbada , scored 3 goals, prompting idiots to toss $20 baseball hats on the ice. A great experiance which I hope to have again in the future.

The roster has been basically the same for the last few years with the exception of a few free agents to plug holes left by other free agents but Quinn the GM does not make moves or promote young talent and his history shows it. He lets talent rot in the minors and plays stiffs in the NHL. He is too in love with the players he has.

Extractions: (Carolina 0-Montreal 1) Box score MONTREAL (Ticker) It took a perfectly executed play for the Montreal Canadiens to finally beat Kevin Weekes. Ribeiro scored on a redirection with 82 seconds left in overtime as the Canadiens posted a 1-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes after failing on nine power plays in regulation. Weekes kept the Hurricanes in the game with 31 saves, many of them spectacular, but the Canadiens won it on a bang-bang play. Defenseman Andrei Markov skated down the left side and threw the puck across the slot to Ribeiro, who slipped behind defenseman Bret Hedican. Ribeiro got his stick on the puck and tipped it past Weekes, giving the Canadiens a season-high fourth straight win. "When I saw Michael (Ryder) get the puck to Andrei, I said to myself I'd better get to the net," Ribeiro said. "I figured someone should take the shot."

Extractions: Well, this is going to be a very different season for me. For the first time since 1985, there won't be a #17 wearing blue and white for me to cheer for. Wendel Clark announced his retirement at the end of June. He is currently in discussions for a new role with the Leafs somewhere in the front office. The Leafs had another fine season, reaching 100 points for the first time ever. GM Pat Quinn has signed 3 free-agents this year in Shayne Corson, Gary Roberts and Dave Manson. Unfortunately, the team lost Kevyn Adams to Columbus in the expansion draft. Let's hope they get a little closer to the Stanley Cup this season. Extractions: Another completely useless blog, courtesy of H. Wade Minter Main I went to what was probably my last Hurricanes game of the season last night. My neighbor Mark has season tickets, and he's been trading in missed games for the past week or so and brought me along again. We started out in section 305, but after the first period, he and his group decided they wanted to move down. So five of us went to the lower level. One guy went ahead, walked up to the Priority Lounge doors, waved his section 305 ticket, and walked right in. Mark and I were next, but the usher grabbed him and checked his ticket, so we got denied. The four of us then went around to another 100-level section where we found no usher, so we walked in and sat down. The seats were great - we watched the second and third periods from a corner behind the home goal. The game itself was a microcosm of the Canes season - make dumb plays to get down early (2-0 four minutes into the game), claw back into it (2-1 after one). Have a long spell where they completely dominate the other team but get little to show for it - they more than doubled Tampa's shots in the second period, physically dominated the Bolts, and controlled the play. But they could only manage one goal, bringing it to 2-2 after two. Then, in the third period, they got sloppy again and gave up a goal after failing to clear the zone, then pulled the goalie and gave up an empty-netter in short order for a 4-2 loss.
Extractions: With less than a week left before opening night, the 'Canes trimmed their roster down to 24 by reassigning Ryan Bayda to Lowell and returning Cam Ward and Danny Richmond to Red Deer and London respectively. As it stands, the 'Canes have eight defensemen and fourteen forwards still left on the roster; and it seems as though the final cut would be either defenseman Niclas Wallin or the versatile enforcer Joey Tetarenko. The decision to reassign Bayda was a difficult one. In 25 games last season, the talented left wing collected 4 goals and 10 assists playing well alongside Ron Francis and Jeff O'Neill. Consequently, coming into training camp this year, he fancied his chances of receiving prominent ice-time. However, the emergence of Eric Staal (the 'Canes top pick in this year's draft) out of training camp meant the disappearance of room on the top scoring lines. And given Bayda's talent, a fourth line role was not what the coaches had in mind for him. Thus, Bayda finds himself back in Lowell, where he will continue to polish his skills and await his turn. The line combinations for this upcoming season are still unclear. It is entirely possible that Staal could center the top line with Francis playing left wing. The second line could feature either Vasicek or Vrbata playing alongside Rod Brind'Amour and Eric Cole. Interestingly, the one line that everyone seems to have settled on is the one featuring Kevyn Adams in between Marty Murray and Craig Adams. At this point everything is a speculation, and what actually takes place will be very interesting to monitor. However, in view of Carolina's need for a hot start to the season, its something that is best resolved sooner rather than later.
