These mini-tournaments are a wonderful opportunity for those who have a limited time to play as they only take up one day of your weekend. Many traveled a long distance - Brian Ayoub came up from Sierra Vista and the Slater family made the journey from Gilbert. Thanks to all for coming to our tournament! Andy Lebovitz (Left) vs. Pavel Savine (Right) Andy Lebovitz captured clear First with a 3 - score. I came in second with 2.5 points (I had to take a 1/2 point bye for the first round). Ari Slater, at 1263, took the best 1300 and under prize. Games of note: Brian Ayoub played a very tough game against Jeff Asman. Brian lost the exchange but was able to hang around to the end game with Jeff overlooked a real 'problem like' endgame solution. In the end Jeff gave up his rook for Brian's far advanced pawn leaving Brian with a lone bishop to face up to two connected passed pawns - but Brian found the magical way out and held on for a draw - nicely done Brian.

Extractions: News Archives - News on Tournaments - Foreign News - Back to JCF Website Dear Chess Friends, We are happy to announce the Curaçao 1962- 2002 chess tournament. This is an open tournament that will be held from November 16 to November 28, 2002. The tournament is dedicated to the fact that it is 40 years ago that the Worldchampion Candidate Tournament was taken place here. Viktor Kortsnoj, Pal Benkö and Yuri Averbach already confirmed that they will return after 40 years to celebrate this anniversary. The tournament will have 9 rounds and a maximum of 120 players including about 15 titled players. We already have confirmations from Jan Timman (NL), Bartek Macieja (Pol), Sofia Polgar (Israel/Hungary), Yona Kosashvili (Israel), Anjelina Belakovskaia (USA), Alonso Zapata (Colombia), Johan Alvarez (Venezuela) and Carlos Gallegos (Venezuela). We will announce the other names of titled players on short term. Our concept is that the tournament should also be very interesting for not professional club players who would like having the experience of a very international tournament with the opportunity to play against opponents from all our wind directions (Europe, USA, Caribbean and South America).

IBM Research | Deep Blue | Overview According to anjelina belakovskaia, a chess grandmaster from theUkraine, it s because there aren t enough women s tournaments. http://www.research.ibm.com/deepblue/home/may08/story_3.html
Extractions: Susan Polgar won her first chess tournament when she was just four years old. By the time she was six, she was playing against adult men and beating them. Yet Polgar says she's faced taunts and jeers throughout her career in competitive chess simply because she's a woman. "The men would say, 'Why am I playing against a woman? Give me a serious opponent,' even though I was winning against them," recalled Polgar, who is currently international grandmaster and world women's champion. Rachel Lieberman, national secretary of the United States Chess Federation (USCF), remembers an 11-year-old chess player from Oregon who wasn't as determined as Polgar. The girl had been taught chess by her mother and had just begun to play in and win tournaments. "The problem was that at every tournament, the boys would tease her," said Lieberman. "They would say things like, 'Oh, I get to play against a girl. Winning this match is going to be real easy.' That does a number on a young chess player's self-esteem, and this girl ended up dropping out of chess altogether." Why aren't there any famous women chess players counterparts to Garry Kasparov or Bobby Fischer who might serve as role models for girls just getting into the game? According to Anjelina Belakovskaia, a chess grandmaster from the Ukraine, it's because there aren't enough women's tournaments. Currently there is only one women's chess tournament with a $4,000 prize. "No woman can make a living through playing chess with that kind of money," she said. "Men have many more tournaments to choose from."
