FORUM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Heat announced Monday that they have signed free agent center Wang Zhizhi to a multi-year contract. A four-year veteran, Zhizhi has appeared in 103 games with the Dallas Mavericks (2001-02) and Los Angeles Clippers (2002-03). The 7-foot-1, 284- pound center has averaged 5.0 points, 1.9 rebounds and 10.3 minutes per game in that span. Zhizhi was selected by Dallas in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft (36th overall) and became the first NBA player from China when he signed with the Mavs on April 4, 2001. He made his NBA debut the next night against Atlanta. Zhizhi signed with the Clippers as a free agent before the start of last season. Miami made another roster move as the Heat waived forward Tyrone Hill. Hill appeared in five games with the Heat this season and averaged 1.8 points per game.

Extractions: BEIJING (AP) Center Wang Zhizhi has been kicked off China's basketball team for choosing to play with the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers instead of at the Asian Games, state media reported Thursday. Wang, who signed last week with the Clippers, has shown an "absence of professional standards, indiscipline and indifference to the interests of the nation," according to a statement by the China Basketball Association published in the Beijing Times and the Beijing Morning Post. He defied the association's orders to play for China at last month's World Championships and the Asian Games so he could work out in Los Angeles. "Participating in international competitions - winning glory for the country - is every athlete's honor and obligation," the statement said. "But when the motherland needed him, he did not care about what's good for the country and was unwilling to serve his country." Wang can return to the Chinese team if he "admits his wrongdoing," the statement said.

Extractions: Straight out of the mean basketball streets of China comes Wang Zhizhi! Drafted in the second round one year ago by Don Nelson's Mavericks, Wang made his first visit to Dallas about a week ago. Picked up in Nelson's fancy car (which awed Wang), and taken to the gym to play a few games against a German national team, Wang has finally had his introduction to a life in the NBA. Wang's first half was horrible. He played like a poor man's Shawn Bradley. Wang hit a finger roll (a cool shot that looks even cooler when a skinny 7-foot kid is performing it), and a fadeaway, mid-range jump shot, and then sat down, apparently overwhelmed by the pressure of even being there. Wang sat out most of the second half, too, but when he did finally enter the game, good things happened. A dribble to open things up for a jump shot. An offensive rebound of his own miss, and a put-back. Then, a three pointer.
Extractions: Chinese sports officials will determine whether or not Wang Zhizhi will return to the NBA. Ronald Martinez/Allsport BEIJING (AP) Chinese basketball star Wang Zhizhi says playing in the NBA was like cruising onto the highway in high gear. Now he may have to shift down. Wang, a 7-foot-1 player who was the first Chinese-born man to play in the U.S. National Basketball Association, finished the season with the Dallas Mavericks after winning a sixth consecutive Chinese championship for his old team, the military-owned Bayi Rockets. "For me, before, playing was like driving a car in town. Then I drove onto the highway, where you really get to test your speed the speed in the NBA is very fast and your vehicle," Wang said at a news conference Wednesday. Leaders of the Bayi Rockets, the People's Liberation Army and the Chinese Basketball Association will decide whether he can return to Dallas, Wang said. The Mavericks deal was only for the postseason.
