Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER AUBURN HILLS - When the media were let into the Pistons' practice facility yesterday, Larry Brown was barking orders, players were running offensive drills and Rasheed Wallace was sitting off to the side, with his left foot immersed in a bucket of ice water. Not that Wallace's situation is anything new to the Pistons. He didn't practice at all during their first-round playoff series against the Bucks, because of soreness in his arch. The team's doctors have told Joe Dumars that the injury is not serious. "The way I look at it," the Pistons president said, "there's a difference between an injury and pain. And what he's dealing with now is more pain than anything else." Wallace might be in pain, but he hasn't been a pain in the neck since coming here from Atlanta back in mid-February. Accepting his role as one of the guys - and not the No. 1 guy - and staying out of trouble with the refs and other authority figures on and off the court, he has helped the Pistons win 25 of their last 30 games. That includes the opener against the Nets, when he played only 28 minutes, and during his time on the sidelines, could be seen smiling and leading the cheers. A happy, fun-loving Rasheed? What happened to the glowering troublemaker from Portland?
Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER The agent for Rasheed Wallace gave Knicks president Isiah Thomas a glimmer of hope yesterday by saying that his client, who will be a free agent on July 1, is not ruling out any potential suitors, including the Knicks. However, William Strickland also acknowledged that Wallace is thrilled with the Detroit Pistons, who are considered the leading candidates to sign the power forward to a long-term contract this summer. "It has been a welcome change for him," Strickland said from Washington, D.C. "He's very happy there." Strickland refused to speculate on Wallace's future and declined to comment when asked if he could see Wallace accepting the Knicks' $5 million mid-level exception. The Pistons could offer Wallace a deal starting at $15 million. "I've been very straightforward with him and he knows every one of his options," Strickland said. "But right now, it's too premature to discuss free agency." Wallace was traded by Atlanta to Detroit on the eve of the February trading deadline, which all but ruined any chance the Knicks had of acquiring Wallace.

Extractions: Portland Starting to Blaze By INSIDEHOOPS.COM The Blazers are fighting to control their oh-so-competitive division, and lately they're doing a fine job of it. Their overall record places them squarely in the mix with the rest of the West's best, but one thing to note is that they've played more road games than all but three teams in the West. One problem in the beginning of the season was an injury to Advydas Sabonis. Lately Sabonis is doing the job, spending decent minutes on the court with terrific per-minute production. A nice surprise has been the play of Damon Stoudamire. Damon put up huge stats in his early years as a Raptor, but since coming to Portland he's been unimpressive as a starting NBA point guard. Career-long backup Greg Anthony has often received key minutes in the 4th quarter over Damon, due to Greg's superior defense, and tendency to make clutch outside shots that Damon isn't known to make. People expected Scottie Pippen to be the first or second best player on this team. Well, Pippen has played most of the season about as effectively as Michael Jordan currently plays (yeah, Mike's retired), although he is contributing a bit more lately. Rasheed Wallace is easily The Man, and coming in second, to everyone's delight (and surprise), is Stoudamire.

Nothing, according to Bucher, because Wallace has ceased to matter in the eyes of his opponents, referees, and more importantly, teammates. Comments Sheed, doesnt he know who pays his salary. Middle upper class white folks, and he doesnt care about the fans. Thats like me saying I dont care about what my Boss things. After the article in the Oregnion paper, I see he just is in there for the money. As he says as long as they are cutting him a check he doesnt care. He needs to go and I mean out of the league. Let him go do his rap music and see how good he does. If it wasnt for Basketball he would be nothing. How can he be so disrespectful. Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Basketball May 10, 2004 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Taking a swipe at the referees without naming names, Detroit Pistons coach Larry Brown charged Monday that some officials have tried to antagonize forward Rasheed Wallace. ADVERTISEMENT "It's just not right, it's not fair," said Brown, whose Pistons lead the New Jersey Nets 2-1 in their Eastern Conference semifinal. "I just think they disrespect the kid in general, that's the bottom line. They can fine me or whatever they want, I'm just telling you a fact." Brown was angered after Wallace was limited to 22 minutes because of foul trouble in New Jersey's 82-64 victory in Game 3. Game 4 is Tuesday night. Wallace went to the bench with two personal fouls before Detroit scored its first point, and the Pistons were down 18 by the time the volatile forward returned four minutes into the second quarter. After the game, Wallace said the Nets' victory should have an asterisk attached because of the way it was officiated a comment that didn't sit well with Nets forward Kenyon Martin. "It doesn't make any sense," said Martin, who played only 21 minutes because of foul trouble. "Didn't he play more minutes than I did?"
