Extractions: Star-Bulletin TURNING to plant his feet as flat as a duck and squaring off to shoot from the side of the lane, Jake Voskuhl looks like he stepped out of the Elvis era. His expression is dead serious, and his sideburns are long - longer than any of the NBA players at the Big Man Camp on the Kamehameha gym floor would even think of growing them. And his two-tone blond hair is thick from letting it grow all summer. "I didn't cut my sideburns for like a month and a half," said the gregarious 6-foot-11 center for the NCAA champion Connecticut Huskies. "My friends were saying, like, 'You need to cut your sideburns, man.' " Forgive Voskuhl that little eccentricity because that's about as out-of-order as he's going to get. He's a lot more conventional than many athletes at his level. Witness how he spent his last few days before coming here. Not partying, not shopping, not lying in the sun.
Extractions: hostName = '.blogs.com'; Main As reported on Bloomberg.com on May 11th - Full report Elizabeth Poole spends two nights a week calling University of Connecticut alumni for donations. Her job has gotten a lot easier since the men's and women's basketball teams won national titles last month. The day before the UConn men defeated Georgia Tech to claim the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship, almost all of the alums Poole reached gave money. Typically, half the people turn her down. "It was my most successful night ever,'' said the 21-year- old psychology major. "The hype was up and everyone wanted to talk about the game.'' The 26,000-enrollment Storrs, Connecticut, school is reaping the rewards of becoming the first in the top level of college sports to win both basketball championships in the same season. Fundraising in April through telephone calls increased almost 30 percent to $209,803 from $163,240 a year ago. The school expects to double its revenue from licensed merchandise such as T-shirts, hats and mugs. "The hype around the two championships is unique,'' said Denis M. McCarthy, chairman of the University of Connecticut Foundation and former president of Fidelity Management Trust Co. "It brings heightened interest on the part of alums and draws more people in.''
Extractions: hostName = '.blogs.com'; Main As reported on KansasCity.com on May 13th - Full story College basketball got an address on Wednesday. âEvery school, every conference has a home base, but what's college basketball's home base?â Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson said. âWe gave it one today. It's Kansas City.â The announcement of a new downtown arena Wednesday brought visions of an NBA or NHL team as a primary tenant, but the building plans already include a full-time attraction â a national college basketball hall of fame. The hall will honor the game's greatest players and coaches and be housed inside the Sprint Center, along with the offices for the National Association of Basketball Coaches, which will help develop the hall. âWe think of this as a great attraction not just for Kansas City but around the country,â NABC executive director Jim Haney said. The college basketball hall of fame could begin honoring coaches and players before the projected 2007 or 2008 date of the arena opening, according to Haney. âThat's a possibility,â Haney said. âI could see something happening ahead of the opening.â
