Extractions: miken@natgas.com Wilt Chamberlain was so devastated after the triple-overtime loss to the Tar Heels that it led to a long separation between Wilt and Kansas basketball. However, all was good again in Jayhawk land when Wilt finally had his number retired last year. Bishop207@aol.com The best school of the Elite Eight is Kansas, the source from which the other seven flow. The basketball arenas in Lexington and Chapel Hill are both named for Kansas Jayhawks. Legendary coaches Adolph Rupp at Kentucky and Dean Smith at North Carolina warmed the bench as players on Kansas' national championship teams in 1923 and 1952, respectively. Kansas' home court bears the name of Phog Allen, for whom Smith and Rupp played and the man James Naismith called the "father of basketball coaching." Not a bad compliment coming from the "father of basketball" himself. Mr. Naismith was Kansas' first coach in 1898, just seven years after inventing the game at a YMCA training school in Springfield, Mass., where today the Basketball Hall of Fame bears his name and enshrines 13 Jayhawks.

Extractions: R egardless of your feelings toward Jayhawk basketball, you have to admire Jacque Vaughn. With an announcement at a press conference Monday, Vaughn opened himself up to second-guessing. He passed up what appeared to be the safest bet for securing his financial future, and instead took the road that will certainly be questioned by many people in all walks of life, perhaps even education. Vaughn said he would stay in school. That's right. By staying in school for his senior year, the Kansas point guard took what he referred to as "a road less traveled." And it is a road many people will likely criticize. You see, after three years of college, Vaughn had an opportunity to take the skills he learned in one area and turn them into dollars. By not entering the National Basketball Association draft after his junior year, Vaughn opens himself up to the possibility of serious injury or a poor senior season, either of which could keep him from entering the NBA. Yet Vaughn chose to stay in school. By doing this, he opens himself up to second-guessing from media and fans across the nation.

Extractions: Roy Williams, the winningest active coach in the country, embarks on his first season as head coach at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina. Williams became the UNC coach on April 14, 2003, just one week after leading the Kansas Jayhawks to the NCAA championship game. The 1972 Carolina graduate is one of the most well respected coaches in the game, in addition to being one of its most successful. In 15 seasons as head coach at the University of Kansas, Williams built a model program that was second to none in the nation. His teams won more than 80 percent of its games, his players were exemplary student-athletes and the program was first-class in all aspects. Williams joins the Tar Heels after leading Kansas to back-to-back appearances in the Final Four. Those were part of 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the second-longest active streak in the country and the fourth-longest by a coach in NCAA Tournament history. The Asheville, N.C., native compiled a 418-101 record, a winning percentage of .805. That win percentage is No.1 among active coaches and third-best in history behind only Clair Bee (.826) and Adolph Rupp (.822). No other active coach in the country has won at least 80 percent of his games.
Extractions: leadership in 1999-2000. For several years, the name Matt Doherty has been mentioned as one of the hot, young assistant coaches in the college basketball community. Every time another major position opened up, people wondered if this would be the job for Doherty. On March 30, 1999, that question was answered, Doherty would launch his head coaching career at the University of Notre Dame. Doherty's career included noteworthy stops at two of the most tradition-rich college basketball programs in the country. He played at North Carolina, where he helped lead the Tar Heels to the 1982 national championship, and spent the last seven years as the top assistant at Kansas, as the Jayhawks advanced to the NCAA tournament each year he was in Lawrence, including a trip to the '93 Final Four. "I think Notre Dame is a fit with my personality," says Doherty. "I think Notre Dame represents class, integrity and excellence. I hope that I have those qualities in my life and I feel proud to represent this fine University."

During his time at the Wizards, they became the most popular road draw and made $30 million, selling out every game. Michael Jordan, while playing for the Chicago Bulls in the 90s, led them to six NBA championship titles. 5-8-03. Bob Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television, has asked basketball legend, Michael Jordan to join his Charlotte expansion franchise. From a cliff diving excursion to a bowling outing, we get the picture of a close knit group that shares more with each other than the basketball. We see young athletes from all types of backgrounds bond with each other as they pursue a common goal. We also see the respect that Haase has for his coach, Roy Williams, and the entire coaching staff. Even when Haase hints at disagreeing with the coaches, he still respects their decisions and defers to their judgment.
