Extractions: LULEA, Sweden (AP) - France has played 30 of 32 European championships, but never once took the title. Now, with NBA champion Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs and three other NBA players on the roster, Les Bleus might finally do it. France begins its quest Friday with a first-round game against Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Coop Arena in this northern Swedish coastal city, just south of the Arctic Circle. In the other two Group A games, France takes on Italy on Saturday and then concludes first-round play Sunday against Slovenia. Former Boston Celtics great Larry Bird, now president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers, will attend both weekend games. The French may be the team to beat in the 10-day tournament, but certainly didn't look like gold-medal contenders when they suffered a stunning 89-84 loss to Sweden in a warm-up game Monday in the capital, Stockholm. "We have no excuse, but we'll have to bounce back and take this defeat positively," said Parker, the speedy point guard who had 32 points and eight assists against the host country. The first Frenchman to win an NBA title, Parker has a different role on the national team. For France, the 21-year-old Belgium-born star is the centre of operations. In Texas, he's the workhorse and plays second fiddle to NBA MVP Tim Duncan.
Extractions: PODGORICA, January 11, 2001 (Euroleague) He may still be the coach of the reigning European national champions, Italy, but when Bogdan Tanjevic revisits PAOK Sports Arena in Thessaloniki, Greece, tonight, it will be as the new head coach of another team, club KK Buducnost, of Podgorica, Montenegro. It is a game rife with drama, as two clubs with high aspirations in the Euroleague battle for a victory that could secure home court advantage in the playoffs at the end of the month, thereby influencing their long-term chances of success. Believe it or not, taking over the job at such a crucial moment in the season doesn't rattle Tanjevic. It is just that kind of pressure that made him take the Buducnost job to begin with. "To be honest, I missed the week-by-week action and stress that a coach of a club faces, and this is one of the reasons that I accepted the offer of Buducnost," Tanjevic said on the eve of the game. "The other reason, of course, is that I had in my hands a very good and attractive offer, that I examined and accepted under a long-term prospective, since I intend to build something solid in my new team." Tanjevic intends to keep coaching the Italian national team, as well. His decision to coach a club at the same time provoked some strong reactions in Italy, but the coach isn't concerned about the pressure on that front, either.

Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia (AP) Steve Nash was the catalyst for Canada throughout the men's Olympic basketball tournament, right down to the final extra 10 minutes. Nash accounted for eight of Canada's 10 points in the second overtime of an 86-83 victory over Russia on Saturday (Friday night EDT) in the seventh-place game. Canada (5-2) won its pool with a 4-1 record and Nash was the reason. The point guard for the Dallas Mavericks came up biggest in the win over Yugoslavia that gave Canada the top seed entering the quarterfinals. He had 26 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in dominating that game in the second half. Against Russia, he finished with 14 points and three assists, but eight of the points came after regulation ended in a 69-69 tie.

Some examples of players who after being drafted, stayed in Europe developing their games are Arvydas Sabonis , Zeljko Rebraca, Andre Kirilenko, to name a few. Some of these players may already belong to NBA teams while others are free agents. Also included on this list are players who have already been drafted. Not included in this list are players deemed too old to make an impact on the NBA. Updated 1.5.03 Milos Vujanic 6-3 PG Partizan Belgrade (Yugoslavia) 1980 The best PG on the Knicks right now. The only problem is he is playing in Europe! Last year we ranked Vujanic as the 12th best prospect out of Europe, and the top overall pure point guard. Since being drafted he has completely blown up. This guy is now the best player overall in Europe, not just the best prospect. He's a point guard with good size and strength. He can take contact, and is very creative with a nice shooting stroke.

Extractions: 27 February 2002 turkish sports headlines Hakan and Parma march on In fact, Hakan has only scored twice since his move from Inter. But he is attracting praise for other qualities. His strong running off the ball and willingness to take on defenders and harass them into mistakes create spaces for others to exploit. Nor is Hakan ever unwilling to lay the ball off for a better placed Michael Severn After two false starts, it looks at last as though Hakan Sukur is set to settle in Italy with Parma. Turkey's leading international goalscorer drew good reviews from the Italian press again after the weekend's 3-2 victory in Piacenza, even though he was not on the scoresheet. La Gazzetta dello Sport awarded him 7 marks out of 10 (to get more than 7 from La Gazzetta you just about have to walk on water) and described him as "unrivalled." "With his effective play," the newspaper said, "he showed he is the team's key man along with (French midfielder Johan) Micoud." All this is a far cry from the first half of the season when Hakan was thrown off the Inter Milan squad by new coach Hector Cuper and spent months waiting for the right transfer to come along.
