Extractions: Printer friendly page Yesterday the Orlando Magic made a bold move in removing GM John Gabriel from the post he held for some 15 years, and replaced him with tough handed John Weisbrod. Why this was done was clarified late yesterday when Magic president and CEO Bob Vander Weide all but admitted to letting the teams operations go virtually unchecked over the past few years saying John Gabriel was given autonomous control over basketball operations, that same control was handed over to Weisbrod. John Weisbrod said that his goal was winning, and that many of the constants in Orlando over the years may change, hinting that the always nice-guy image the Magic have sought to maintain may get pushed to the side as the Magic recommit themselves to winning at any price necessary. During the press conference Weisbrod was asked about the character factor and his response was to hint that winning would come first saying "Character has got to be sports character; the kind of character that ends up on the winning side of a fight, as opposed to necessarily that their value system off court behavior or the type of people they are. There are a lot of guys that I wouldnt necessarily want to take out to dinner, but I would want on my team."
