Extractions: Lets talk Portland Trail Blazers Basketball The Blazers were this close to reaching the NBA Finals. This close. Yeah, that close. The team is still in tact, but part of their base may be taking off. The team was built for depth. No one in the league has the bench the Blazers do. Their subs are better than lots of starters around this over-expanded league. Portland came very close to achieving their goal - if not for the worst quarter a team could possibly suffer, they'd have eliminated the Lakers, and, in our opinion, would have taken the Pacers out in about 6 games to win their first championship since the Bill Walton days. Now, they've got a problem.

Oh well. Still a magnificent work of art combined with a compellings and intruiging story. This will get you thinking The hauntingly beautiful writings, will keep you returning to this book (and the previous two) to search for the meaning. Amazingly enthraling and engaging, wonderfully illustrated. Nick Bantock needs to be congratulated for his amazing work in the Griffin and Sabine triology. His superb illustrations bring an intriguing story to life. Watching the correspondence of Griffin and Sabine unfold in these wonderful books is like watching a private moment unfold from the window. As you peak in at these two wonderfully real characters you not only can't wait to turn each page to see what is said but what is drawn. The style of these books was so well done they deserve the highest recognition. The realism used to create actual letters and postcards between Griffin and Sabine for the reader to take out and hold only adds to this amazing experience. New York Daily News - Basketball - Kenyon Wants Out Of N.J. to Nets and Blazers sources, the teams talked about a deal that would send Martin and Dikembe Mutombo to Portland for Rasheed Wallace and arvydas sabonis. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/story/107605p-97314c.html
Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Irked that Nets have not given him extension, Kenyon Martin asks Rod Thorn for trade. Upset the Nets have not offered him a maximum contract extension, Kenyon Martin has asked to be traded, the Daily News has learned. A Nets source told The News that Martin is offended by the Nets' offer of an estimated $65 million to $70 million over six years, which is well short of the $85 million to $90 million the 2000 No.1 overall pick is seeking. According to the source, Martin's agent, Brian Dyke, asked Nets president Rod Thorn for a trade earlier this week. "I have no comment," Dyke said when contacted last night. Martin and Thorn, who is out of town, could not be reached. Before Dyke requested a trade, however, the Nets were already discussing one with the Blazers. According to Nets and Blazers sources, the teams talked about a deal that would send Martin and Dikembe Mutombo to Portland for Rasheed Wallace and Arvydas Sabonis. Sabonis will earn $7million this season and has two years left on his contract. However, his contract is not guaranteed until Aug.15, which means a team can waive the 38-year-old center to save money. The 6-11 Wallace, a 28-year-old two-time All-Star, will earn $17million this season before becoming a free agent. Kevin Garnett will also become a free agent, and the Nets would love to make a run at the Timberwolves superstar next year. However, former Nets and new Blazers GM John Nash, who is looking to cut salary and improve the image of the team, is not interested in adding Mutombo's gigantic contract, which still has two years and $37.6million remaining. Martin will earn $5.1million and become a restricted free agent if he does not agree to an extension before Oct. 31.

Extractions: F ANTASY B ASKETBALL S TATISTICS October 7, 1998 A typical fantasy basketball league has 12 teams with 10 starting players on each team. To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! CATEGORY AVG PER GAME STND DEV STND DEV/AVG Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks Treys Free Throws FG% In the same manner the fantasy stiffs can be identified. Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.
