An All-American at the University of San Francisco, Russell led his team to Olympic gold in 1956, the same year he joined the Boston Celtics. "I hated practice," he revealed. "I never minimized, however, the importance of repetition in getting ready for a season. Your craftsmanship comes out of your dedication to your practice." An agile center who was a celebration of defensive skill, Russell in his 13 seasons led the Celtics to a remarkable 11 NBA championships (1957, 1959-1966, 1968-1969). As the core of the Celtic Dynasty, Russell dominated the boards with shot-blocking and rebounds. Larger-than-life, he was named "Most Valuable Player" five times (1958, 1961-1963, 1965). "I wanted my career to be such that people would say, 'He won championships,'" he said. "I was a man who played basketball as well as he could." As player-coach in 1966, Russell became the first African-American to coach a U.S. professional sports team. He retired from play in 1969, then continued his coaching

Check out our conversation with Russell, as well as SI's ranking of the 20 greatest dynasties of the century. CNN/SI: Kevin Donner from Livingston, N.J., asks: "How different would your career be if you were playing today? And do you think the term "dynasty" as it applied to your Celtics can exist in the NBA today?" Bill Russell: I'd be making a lot more money! [Laughs.] I don't think it would be that much different. CNN/SI: What about a dynasty? Would you be able to sustain it? Russell: Yes. Because what you do is, you get a core group, which we did, and there's enough money under the cap to put a group like that together and keep them. What you have to do is factor into the decision of how you build the team the cost and the limits of what you can do. CNN/SI: Timmy O'Neill from Redmond, Ore., says: "I took up the thinking that you were the best basketball player ever in the the '60s. Born William Felton Russell in Monroe, Louisiana in 1934, he moved with his family to Oakland, California, 9 years later. After failing to make any sports teams in junior, high he served as the school mascot in high school before he made the basketball team in the 10th grade. He went on to become an all-state player in high school leading his college team to two NCAA titles. Selected by the Boston Celtics in 1956 in the first round of the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, Russell delayed turning professional in order to play on the United States team that won the men’s basketball gold medal at the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. Russell went on to become the greatest influence over the game of basketball, the transformer of the game through defensive play and transition to the modern game, the most extraordinary leader of the Celtics with 11 world championships in 13 seasons making him, and the Boston Celtics, unequalled in achievement. He collected more than 21,000 rebounds and scored more than 14,000 points in his career, and was voted the NBA's most valuable player in five seasons.

The ad features Russell's voiceover, quipping about the skill of rebounding, while black and white footage shows the Celtics great bounding in the air, all legs and arms. There is something about the way he pulls down those rebounds: the exaggerated leaps reveal a presence that is not quite refined but undeniably beautiful. His athleticism spoke for itself; it is because of Russell that the NBA began to record the statistical category of blocked shots. His ability to balance force and grace was reflected off the court as well. Russell was a star at a time when black athletes were still the distinct minority in professional sports, in a city that was (and still is) racially polarized, on a team that has a leprechaun for a mascot. He faced death threats and overt racism when he walked about Boston. Yet through it all, Russell remained (and remains to this day) an icon of dignity. The aforementioned commercial is branded in the end with Russell's trademark smile and infectious chuckle. He's the kind of guy you wish were your grandfather; I imagine him telling true stories and tall tales in the same breath and making them both completely believable. The fact that this legend of nobility and sport is now in the twilight of his years has not been lost on this sports fan. Many of our legendary black athletes, heroes whose impact on their respective sports matched Russell's, have already been lost to us.
