Extractions: Basketball News Services Newly-acquired Trail Blazers Center Theo Ratliff took a couple minutes to answer questions before last night's game against the Boston Celtics. Ratliff is leading the league in blocks at 3.6 per game, and has played a large part in turning things around in the last three games, keeping the Blazers in the playoff hunt. Ratliff spoke about defense, Coach Maurice Cheeks, and playing in Portland. This is what he had to say... Obviously there weren't many fans in Atlanta, but how would you compare the fans in Portland with the fans in Philadelphia? Theo Ratliff: "Similar fans as far as their passion for the game. Definitely something that I was accustomed to in Philly, it's definitely that same feeling here. The fans are very energetic, and very into the game.. you know, they recognize good basketball." In Philly you had Iverson, who was a legitimate superstar, do you need a guy like that to be successful?
Extractions: Basketball News Services The Portland Trail Blazers topped the Sacramento Kings in Portland Friday night 83-81 as Chris Webber's last-second shot banked in just after the buzzer. The win gave the Blazers a nice pair of wins over the top two seeds in the Western Conference and also gave them the season series with Sacramento, 3-1. Damon Stoudamire led the Blazers with 20 points, Zach Randolph had 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Darius Miles added 13 points. Peja Stojakovic led the Kings with 18 and Chris Webber added 16. But the story of the game, as it has been so often since The Trade, was Theo Ratliff. Ratliff came close to a triple-double - something he has never done in the pros, he says - with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and eight blocked shots. Some of the blocks were sensational and the Kings acknowledged his presence was a major factor in swinging the game Portland's way. "He was terrific, he went after everything," Coach Rick Adelman said. "I give him credit, he challenged everything and altered a lot of shots."

Ratliff was traded to Portland in early February; he came from Atlanta with Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Dan Dickau in exchange for Rasheed Wallace and Wesley Person. InsideHoops.com editor Jeff Lenchiner met with Ratliff for an exclusive interview before a Knicks game in Madison Square Garden.

Despite Ratliff's pedesterian eight points and seven rebounds a game, his addition to the Blazers lineup should give them chemistry that's been badly missing. A frontline of Abdur-Rahim at small forward, Zach Randolph at power forward and Ratliff in the middle gives Portland much more balance then they've had in recent years.

To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.
