Extractions: Comments I agree 100 percent players earning to much and not enough guys like Stockton and Duncan, no heart! Posted by: Hook on January 27, 2003 07:27 PM True there are few great players and too many teams but I don't think contraction is the answer. I have followed bad teams for a long time and if they just got kicked out of the league for sucking it would piss me off. On the case of player quality I think it is a matter of incentive. I would still pay to see mediocre players play hard. (ex. Kurt Rambis, A.C. Green, Michael Cage) With the money that is thrown around these days there is no incentive to play hard because the players will get paid anyway. The perfect exaple of this is Houston Rockets center Kelvin Cato. He had lots of pottential and can be a decent player but he got his $40+ million contract and decided not play hard. What is really sad (or irritating) is that he was praised for his "improvement" this year. So he tried hard for 3 minutes a game instead of 2. This is ridiculous and Cato is only trying "hard" because his contract is almost up and he wants to back up Yao Ming.

Sports -- Team USA Defeated: Are You Kidding? The United States of America lost in an international basketball competition? withCherokee Parks, Olden Polynice, Rick Mahorn, Mugsy Bogues and kurt rambis? http://www.thehoya.com/sports/090602/sports7.cfm
Extractions: They lost? They freaking lost? The United States of America lost in an international basketball competition? To Argentina? The little Andean country that has had more presidents in the last two years than I have had Pepsis? We shot 22 percent in the first half? Was there a lid on the basket? Were the Argentineans shooting at us with pistols and slingshots? Did we replace the starting five with Cherokee Parks, Olden Polynice, Rick Mahorn, Mugsy Bogues and Kurt Rambis? We lost? Thats right folks, the United States of America, protector of freedom around the globe, the lone remaining superpower, mightiest among all nations, lost 87-80 to Argentina on Wednesday night, the first time Team USA has lost in international competition since the dawn of the Dream Team era. The following human beings are now to be officially considered national embarrassments: George Karl, Elton Brand, Antonio Davis, Baron Davis, Michael Finley, Raef LaFrentz, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Reggie Miller, Jermaine ONeal, Paul Pierce, Ben Wallace and Jason Williams. They lost to Argentina. In basketball. Quick, without using the Internet, name one Argentinean basketball player. Cant do it, can you? Well, a team of 12 of them beat the United States. Frightening. And did you see the Argentinean uniforms? They looked like they just stepped out of those Nike commercials from this summer, and then they made the Americans look like complete chumps.

Extractions: Charlie Hough, one of baseball's genuine characters, was handed his walking papers as Dodgers pitching coach. Meantime, Kurt Rambis, a basketball original, awaits his fate as head coach of the Lakers. These jobs should come with a surgeon general's warning: Somebody has to take a fall, and upper management rarely fires itself. Seeing their names linked, it's striking how similar Hough and Rambis are: good people thrust into impossible situations and held accountable for the failures of the work-ethic challenged. How ironic it is these gentlemen would be roasted over the underachievement of rich guys in their care. Hough and Rambis were poster boys for maximum achievement in their time in the sun, taking modest athletic gifts to amazing heights. Hough was a weak-hitting infielder who converted to pitching in the low minors, desperately clutching a thread of hope. He developed a career-saving knuckleball and floated it for 25 seasons, winning 216 games seven more than Hall of Famer Don Drysdale. Making a seamless midcareer transition from reliever to starter, Hough appeared in 858 games, 16th all time. He has been everywhere, done everything, collecting tons of friends and no known enemies.

Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER When is a negative a positive? Since the results were from X-rays of Rashard Lewis' left shoulder, the negative conclusion was positive news for Lewis and the Sonics. The forward missed practice yesterday to have his shoulder examined after suffering what has been diagnosed as a slight strain of the left shoulder. Lewis was injured in the third quarter of the 108-102 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday and did not return, but said he will play tonight when the Sonics (11-10) play the Suns (8-16) in Phoenix. It's the same shoulder Lewis dislocated in April 2002. Another dislocation or repeated strains could lead to surgery, but that's something Lewis isn't considering now. "I'm still confident that it's OK," Lewis said. "Right now, I'm feeling fine. It just depends on how many more times it slips out."
