Travel In Zagreb - Croatia - Europe - Culture - WorldTravelGate.net®- the birthplace of basketball; Drazen Petrovic (you can see his beautiful monumentin the Olympic park in Lausanne, Switzerland); Toni Kukoc; and dino radja. http://www.eurotravelling.net/croatia/zagreb/zagreb_culture.htm
Extractions: Zagreb - Culture In the area of collective sports, basketball is very popular. The best players have been: Kresimir Cosic (1948-1995; he spent last years of his life in the USA as the Croatian diplomat); became only the third international player ever elected to the world's Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Springfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace of basketball; Drazen Petrovic (you can see his beautiful monument in the Olympic park in Lausanne, Switzerland); Toni Kukoc; and Dino Radja. Two best basketball teams are: Cibona (Zagreb) and the former Jugoplastika (Split), which were several times European champions. A At the close of the day, when you want to sit down in one of Zagreb's restaurants, here is a real gastronomic Mecca. You will have a truly remarkable choice from seafood, vegetarian and classical restaurants to snack bars or real gastronomic shrines. But words are insufficient you must taste the food. Try local specialties perhaps - we can recommend the Zagrebacki odrezak (veal cutlet filled with ham and cheese and then fried), Turkey with Mlinci (thinly-rolled pastry baked at high temperature and then boiled), and the original Zagorski Strukli, a continental specialty made from local pastry and cheese. And when the city lights are dimmed, a different Zagreb will emerge before your eyes, a city which moves to the rhythm of modern and classical dance mingled with the romantic sounds of a piano from a bar. You could even try your luck in one of the casinos. Different and with more dazzle, it still remains the same old Zagreb that you know - serene and safe, charming and friendly.
Watertown Football The crowds were large and passionate, with basketball second only to soccer in playedagainst past and future NBA stars like Dominique Wilkins and dino radja. http://www.watertownraiders.com/HOF/JimPierrakos.html
Extractions: In 1986 Craig Stockmal became coach of the Watertown High varsity basketball team. He had a simple motto, emblazoned on a Tshirt: "Hard Work." At the time, though, he probably didn't realize that he had on the junior varsity roster someone who would internalize that motto and parlay it into a professional basketball career. By his sophomore year at WHS he was dressing for the varsity but had never checked into a game. That next summer though, he recalls, "I grew about four inches and lost a lot of excess weight" Indeed, over the course of his high school years he sprouted from 5'8" to 6'4". And he learned from Coach Stockmal, to whom he quickly became close. Recruited by Babson College, Jim continued his winning ways. He led his squad in scoring and rebounding all four years. His senior season was very special, both for him and for the team. Babson went to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history that year. The squad was ranked first in New England, and fifth nationally in Division III at the end of a regular season highlighted by their defeat of Division I's Harvard Crimson by twenty points. Jim himself was named league most valuable player-the New England Division III Player of the Year by both the NABC and the ECAC and a first-team All-American to boot. (Not surprisingly he was inducted into the Babson Hall of Fame in 1997.)
The Spring Of Competitiveness outside of the United States is represented in the National basketball Associationby NBA teams Tony Kukoc plays for the Chicago Bulls, dino radja for the http://www.croatiaemb.org/C_U_relations/Cro&USA/part13.htm
Extractions: The Spring of Competitiveness Kresimir Cosic, whose memory lives so vividly at the Croatian Embassy in Washington where he served until his early death as Minister Counselor, was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1996. This event reaffirmed his stature as one of Europe's best players, his skills being so finely developed to attract serious offers from several NBA teams. Beside Kresimir Cosic, there are other members of the Hall of Fame that Croatia claims as its own, including George Mikan and "Pistol" Pete Maravich who were of Croatian origin, as are probable future Hall-of-Famers, former player and Houston Rockets' coach and two times NBA champion coach Rudy Tomjanovich and Boston Celtics' great, Kevin McHalle. Beside basketball, Croatians star in other sports popular in the United States. Prominent Croatian athletes include Stanley Cup winner and MVP Joe Sakic from the Colorado Avalanche, NFL quarterback Elvis Grbac from the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers' Tony Mandarich, and Chicago Bears' Chris Zorich, just to name the few. America's favorite pastime, baseball, also witnessed a significant contribution to its success by players that have their roots in Croatia. The Cleveland Indians had an outstanding pitcher in Al Milnar, Roger Maris became famous for his home runs, etc. Some of the players that came from Croatia'or their ancestors'changed their names upon arriving, adjusting them to English language spelling. That is the reason that some of them were not known to the wider audience as Croats or as of Croatian decent, but stories about them and their successes live among the Croatian American community.

Extractions: Amidst the divorce of European basketball's governing bodies in the summer of 1999 and the ensuing creation of a new " Euroleague " competition, a little tinkering with the rules of the game itself went almost unnoticed. But, a decision to cut attack times - in line with the NBA - from 30 to 24 seconds has thrown up some unexpected results, particularly in Greece where unfancied Peristeri sit atop the league after an 12-match winning streak. Turning the tables The six seconds of separation from last season's format have allowed the team from one of Athens poorer suburbs to turn the tables on the traditional footballing giants: Panathinaikos, Olympiakos and AEK Athens, whose basketball divisions have dominated since the creation of a national league in 1981. For many, the key to their success has been speed. With an average age of only 23, Peristeri's lung-busting style has suddenly become lethally effective. A potent mix of homegrown Greek talent such as 19-year-old guard Michalis Pelekanos and big team cast offs like Russian centre Alexei Zervosenko have so far been unstoppable.

Let us introduce you to the most famous names and successes of Croatian sports in it's history... General sources of information: Football: This is, certainly, Croatia's most popular sport. It' began developing in the beginning of the 20 th century, and Croatian football federation was formed in 1912. Croatian teams and players played in the league of former Yugoslavia with the exception of 1941-1945 when Croatian league existed for five years. Despite the privileges that the other clubs had, Croatian clubs, especially Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb (now called Croatia) were always on top having not just sports, but a certain political value, being a way of expressing Croatian nationality. In addition to many domestic titles, Dinamo Zagreb won the Fairs cup (now called UEFA cup) in 1967.
