To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.

Extractions: COLUMN: Sense of 'machismo' contributed to Phills' fatal crash Mourners sat in tears at Bobby Phills' funeral on Sunday. On Monday, Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, the ironic death of one of the NBA's classiest players set in. Family members, teammates and friends have characterized the 30-year-old Charlotte Hornets guard as a dedicated father and husband and a strong force in the community, perhaps even stronger than the basketball player who averaged 10.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists for his career. In many ways, Phills was the anti-athlete, someone who didn't seem to fit the machismo of the professional sporting world. He failed that characterization in one way, though, and that machismo killed him. Police sources have said that Phills was racing teammate David Wesley after practice when Phills' 1997 Porsche 993 Cabriolet skidded off the road and crashed into oncoming traffic in the other lanes. Investigators believe the Hornets' guards may have been traveling at speeds of close to 110 mph when the crash occurred. Not that this is anything new. Stories constantly break about athletes who are cited for speeding. Tim Hardaway's highway patrol run-ins could fill an episode of COPS. Psychologists have sought to answer why such a large percentage of professional athletes have a knack for driving at abnormally high speeds and the answers usually deal with a heightened sense of machismo, as if nothing can happen to them because they are athletes. It's as if speeding is an athletic test, like mastering the fadeaway jumper or slam dunking from the free-throw line. It's super human.
Extractions: ATHLETES: Bobby Phills' death, however sad, is ultimately his own fault By Blas Barragan I loathe the state of the world today. It is unfortunate that in this society, which values style over substance, professional athletes regularly assume the responsibility of "role model" - whether they have a mind to or not. We observe these men and women in awe of their athleticism. We worship the grace that spawned them. Through us, they are born anew, immortal in our eyes. They are not immortal. A case in point is Charlotte Hornets point guard Bobby Phills. Anyone acquainted with recent sports news has been thoroughly slapped about the face by the sorrowful news of this young man's untimely and tragic passing. Untimely? Tragic? I beg you not to misunderstand me and in your anger toss aside this article for one of a less offensive nature. Death is death. No matter how we look at it, death is always a terrible thing. The fact that Phills is gone is truly a tragedy, surely for those he loved and those who loved him. Yet do not even for a moment consider Bobby Phills a victim - not of God, of fate, of lamentable luck or even of David Wesley. He would still be with us today if he had the sense not to beg for death.
