Stunned and tearful teammates and Hornets officials gathered at the accident scene less than a mile from the Charlotte Coliseum, where minutes earlier Phills and the other players had been practicing for Wednesday night's game with the Chicago Bulls . The game was postponed. Phills, 30, who began his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers , was traveling at a "very high rate of speed" when he collided with a car headed toward the coliseum, police spokesman Keith Bridges said. A minivan rear-ended the other car. Two people in those vehicles were hospitalized. Witnesses said teammate David Wesley , the Hornets' starting point guard, also may have been driving too fast in his own Porsche, according to police. Wesley's car wasn't involved in the accident, and he was questioned at the scene.

He never, never took that for granted." Mark Bartelstein, Phills Chicago-based agent "When I got him as a client, he was struggling with making the NBA. Once he got the big deal, to him, it was if nothing had ever really happened. The same laughs we had when he was struggling were the same laughs we had when he got that big contract. "To me, its just devastating. Im just devastated. The guy was not just my client, he was my friend. We spoke just last night, which makes this an even harder day. To think these two kids will grow up without a father is what I keep thinking about. Thats the really terrible, awful thing about this. The world lost a great father and person today." Bartelstein on Phills rise from making the NBA minimum to signing a 7-year, $32.48 million deal with Charlotte in 1997 "Bobby Phills was all that you would want in a human being. ... He had extreme high character. A family man. I cant tell you what he meant to the Cavs. If theres a person you would want to your children to be, a role model, its Bobby Phills. This is a sad day."

He was a 6-5 center, and he always wanted to be a big guard in the NBA. That was one of his dreams. He has a beautiful wife and two children. My wife (Cassandra) is en route to Charlotte now to be with the family. We will be at the funeral in Baton Rouge. You just wonder why something like this has to happen to a guy."
