Extractions: from those little radios" Like the weather, everybody complains about TV sports announcers, but nobody seems to do anything about it. All you have to do is turn on the radio. Not that the TV announcers who have been reporting the NCAA basketball games are actually bad (though some fans get all emotional over perceived slights of their favorite teams.) It's just that the games are so much more exciting on radio. Last Saturday, we caught two NCAA basketball tournament games on the radio, and both broadcasts filled the imagination. John Rooney handled the play-by-play of Connecticut's 67-62 West Region victory over Gonzaga, and his voice crackled with the tension in the air of the arena, going up and down with the noise of the crowd, baskets made and rebounds snared. Rooney called one dramatic three-point shot, chanting, "He fakes the three. Takes the three. HITS the three!" Minutes after the Connecticut victory in Phoenix, Ariz., the scene shifted to Knoxville, Tenn., and over the airwaves floated the familiar voice of Cincinnati Reds baseball announcer Marty Brennaman. But it wasn't word pictures of baseball Brennamen was painting, it was the South Region NCAA basketball final that finally went to Ohio State in a 77-74 thriller over St. Johns.

Extractions: "There is a perception of Michael Redd right now. Hes a good player, but he scored a lot of points on a bad team (last year)," OBrien said. "I think that Michael now will have an opportunity to become a much better basketball player, instead of a player who is just trying to score." Joining Redd at guard is James "Scoonie" Penn, who will run the point. Penn transferred from Boston College before last season. He came over with OBrien, who also left the Golden Eagles after the 1996-97 season. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound guard was the 1996 Big East Conference and ECAC Rookie of the Year after averaging 13.2 points, 3.5 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. He was also selected First-Team All-Big East while leading Boston College to the conference tournament championship. Redd and Penn might already be in sync with each other since they toured all summer together. Their college all-star squad finished second in the Acropolis Cup in Athens, Greece. OBrien looks forward to having these two play together. "Now we have two kids that other teams have to guard and be mindful of," OBrien said.

Extractions: What do you get when you cross one of the biggest names in college athletics with a brand-spanking new arena? Ohio State is about to find out. When the Buckeyes take the court against Oakland tomorrow night, it'll be at the Value City Arena, a part of the $106.5 million Jerome Schottenstein Center. The center, which seats 19,500 fans for basketball games, is complete with one toilet for every 47 spectators, 5,652 light fixtures and 12 miles of refrigerated piping (the arena is also used for hockey). Cement trucks poured 3,888 full loads of cement during construction, and there are 52 luxury suites that can be reserved for a mere $45,000 a year. "In my mind, I can't imagine a nicer on-campus facility in the country," Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien said. "I'm ecstatic to be playing in the new center." And, even though the Buckeyes haven't played a game in the Schottenstein Center yet, it's already paying dividends. "All three (of our new recruits) committed after unofficial visits, and I'm sure the building had something to do with that," O'Brien said. But the Schottenstein Center likely won't see a winner just yet. The Buckeyes finished dead last in the Big Ten last year, with a 1-15 record, and 8-22 overall.

DAILY BRUIN ONLINE - Fans Often Overcome By March Madness suffering from MM will constantly harp on the fundamentals of basketball and have Whenasked what scoonie penn s assistsper-game average is, if you respond http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/db/issues/00/02.29/sports.denicke.html
Extractions: COLUMN: Basketball lovers suffer uncontrollable urges to spout stats, give high-fives It starts with the twitching and shaking. It's that feeling that technology is your friend as you hug the TV and down one for the guy who came up with satellite television. It's the itch, the total obsession with free-throw percentage in the final two minutes of a game. It is March Madness. Many sports fans have become stricken with this disease. Its symptoms include nervous ticks developed from clicking the remote control too quickly and the urge for diaper dandies and super seniors alike to end every sentence with emphatic answers, baby! I know what you're thinking. "That's great and all. But how can I tell if I suffer from March Madness?" Well, the columnist is in, and I have devised a little test for all you out there suffering from college basketball fever. Think of it as March Madness (MM), Cosmo style. The first stage of MM is epitomized by behavior in public. When your TA asks you who the 15th president of the United States was, how do you answer? If you'd say James Buchanan, give yourself one point. If you feel the need to add, "He was awesome, baby! A real high riser!", give yourself three points. But if you follow that answer with: "Super, scintillating, sensational - he was the three-S man," and proceed to run around the classroom doling out high-fives, give yourself five points. The MM addict only cares about the euphoria of winning and isn't afraid to share it with others.
