Extractions: Except if a Big 10 team is playing UM, or a team a friend may play on, I almost always root for them. So i'm glad to see alot of Big 10 teams doing well in recruiting. Here are my thoughts on next years incoming classes in the Big 10, including Transfers and Prop 48. (Does not include UM, who I think right now has the 2nd best class in the Big 10). 1. ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI - Marcus Griffin, 6-9, F/C, No. 1 Juco, #8 Brian Cook, 6-10, C/F; and Frankie Williams, 6-4, 1/2G, gives Illinois three Top 25 players coming out of High School. Griffin and Cook will likely both start right away. Williams also might start, but he will likely begin coming off the bench. Jerrance Howard gives the Illini a very capable backup PG. A very talentd class. Should help Lon Krugar get Illinois back to the upper half of the Big 10. And remember, the state of Illinois is loaded with talent in next years class. 2. MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS - Mike Chappell, 6-8, SF, was a part time starter at Duke, a Top 25 player coming out of High School, and a very talented wing man. Could start right away at State. #81 Al Anagonye, 6-7, PF, gives State a tough post man to help ease the loss of Antonio Smith. #148 Adam Wolfe, 6-8, P/SF, should also help there. But his minutes, along with 6-9 C/F Jason Andreas will likely come down the road. The prize of this class however is #12 Jason Richardson. All summer people were saying he was just a great athlete. That he is. But Jason has developed a perimeter game to compliment his outstanding athletic ability. Should not only be one of the Big 10's top players, but in a couple years, one of the nations best. The state of Michigan could have two Top 10 teams in a few years. Like Illinois, the state of Michigan is also loaded with talent in the Junior class.

Extractions: Maryland Sets School Record With 28th Win Written by Jim Johnson Posted 3/14/99 So far, so good! That's about as euphoric as it got for the Maryland Terrapins after victories over Valparaiso and Creighton earned them a spot in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. While some of many lower seeded schools had wildly jubulant celebrations after their first and second round victories, Maryland merely shook hands and trotted off the court in search of bigger game. The 82-60 triumph over last year's Cinderella team, the Valparaiso Crusaders and the 75-63 defeat of the Creighton Blue Jays were expected but should not be taken for granted. In a tournament where the unexpected has become commonplace, a higher seed such as Maryland should take great satisfaction in moving through the first two rounds unscathed. Five teams seeded fifth or higher were victims of schools seeded twelfth or lower in the first round. Additionally, all seventh seeds lost to tenth seeds and all eighth seeds lost to nine seeds in the opening round. In the second round, two second seeds and two third seeds were knocked off. The South Region, where Maryland is competing, is the only bracket where the top four seeded teams avoided upsets and all advanced to the round of 16. Before looking ahead, let's look at how the Terps advanced. Valpo was feared because of their surprising success in last year's tournament, but this Crusader squad did not bear close resemblance to that group. The hero of their 1998 miracle, the coach's son Bryce Drew, has moved on to the NBA and this year's starting lineup included three freshmen. Nonetheless, a disciplined, well-coached team can prove troublesome for a high-octane team such as Maryland if they are not hitting on all cylinders. Through most of the first half, Valpo managed to stay with the Terps. They may have even built a lead if not for the efforts of Terence Morris and Steve Francis. A 9-0 run near the end of the second half enabled Maryland to take control of the game and go in with a 46-36 edge.

Extractions: ByJeffrey Shelman, Post staff reporter KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Forget for tonight that notion about basketball being a sport for big guys, a place where size matters more than anything else. Tonight's NCAA Tournament South Regional final between Ohio State and St. John's is a battle of low-to-the ground guys, guys who lie about their height in order to make them look just a little bit less vertically challenged. This isn't Buckeyes vs. the Red Storm. This is 5-foot-10 Scoonie Penn vs. 6-1 Erick Barkley. 'In Scoonie and Erick you have two of the best point guards in the country,' St. John's coach Mike Jarvis said. 'You cannot get to where we are without a great point guard. . . . Neither team would be here without them.' That might be the understatement of the tournament. In Thursday's regional semifinals, both point guards were impressive. Barkley had 24 points and nine assists in third-seeded St. John's 76-62 victory over Maryland. Penn, who averages 16.9 points and 4.2 assists per game, scored 13 points in the final 10 minutes and 26 for the game as the fourth-seeded Buckeyes eliminated top-seeded Auburn, 72-64. After defeating Maryland, Barkley, a 21-year-old freshman who's averaging 13.5 points and 4.7 assists per game, talked about how he could blow past Maryland's Terrell Stokes when he wanted to, a comment to which Penn took a little bit of offense.
