Extractions: Celtics retire 00 of C Robert Parish Posted: Sun January 18, 1998 at 3:20 p.m. EST Center Robert Parish, the all-time leader in games played and part of one of the greatest frontcourts in NBA history, had his trademark 00 uniform number retired today by the Boston Celtics at halftime of their 103-96 loss to the Indiana Pacers Parish, who teamed with forwards Larry Bird and Kevin McHale to help the Celtics win three championships in the 1980s, became the 21st team member to have his number or name retired and the first in the new FleetCenter, which opened for the 1995-96 season. "I want to thank my junior high school teacher who I think of today, because without his inspiration, I wouldn't have pursued the NBA," said the stoic Parish, who played 14 of his record 21 seasons with the Celtics. "I also want to thank my mother and father for making me who I am. "I want to thank the fans for all of your support through the years. I also want to thank my martial arts instructor who taught me patience and poise, something I used every day in my career. And all of the teammates I had to make this day possible. They certainly made my job a lot easier."

(AP) James Worthy and Robert Parish squared off in the classic Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals of the 1980s. Now they could enter the Basketball Hall of Fame side by side. Worthy and Parish were among 21 finalists announced Monday, the largest group ever by the North American screening committee, which considers the men's college and pro game. At least 18 votes from the 24-member honors committee are needed to be a finalist. This September's inductees will be announced April 7 during the NCAA Final Four in New Orleans. Worthy, one of the game's great fast-break finishers, led North Carolina to the NCAA title in 1982 and helped boost Los Angeles to three NBA championships (1985, 1987, 1988). He is one of seven Lakers to have his number retired. Parish holds the NBA record for most seasons (21) and most games (1,611) and helped lead Boston to NBA titles in 1981, 1984 and 1986. He holds the NBA record for defensive rebounds (10,117) and scored 23,334 points during a career that included stints with the Golden State, Charlotte and Chicago as well as 14 seasons with the Celtics.

Extractions: Hall Of Fame The basketball hall of fame, founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, opened it's doors October, 1949, in a two-room office on the campus of Springfield College in Massachusetts, where James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. The first members were inducted in 1959 and construction on a building for the basketball hall of fame began two years later. But construction was stopped on the hall for lack of money. New fund-raising drives had to be started to complete the basketball hall of fame construction. The building finally opened on Feb. 17, 1968. From 1968 until 1985 the hall attracted 630,179 visitors. A new $11 million building in a different location in Springfield was opened to the public on June 30, 1985. In 2002, the Hall of Fame moved into its third building, a $45 million, 80,000-square-foot facility. Nominees for the basketball hall of fame are voted upon by a 24-member committee of trustees, media, and inducted members. If not elected within five years after nomination, a candidate can be considered by a special veterans committee after another wait of five years.
