Celtics PRO BASKETBALL NOTES By Peter May, Globe Staff, 9/7/2003 The longer he played, the more obvious it became that Robert Parish would join the other members of the Big Three in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Twenty-one years? More than 1,600 games? Who would have thunk it? ADVERTISEMENT It's easy to remember the golden days of the Chief. The Celtics didn't win a title in the Bird era without him and they would have gone titleless without him. But to listen to Parish speak Friday prior to his Hall of Fame induction was to listen to someone who not only never thought about the Hall of Fame, but also was contemplating a new line of work before he ever came to Boston. That's because Parish spent the first four years of his career on a dysfunctional, selfish, going-nowhere team in Golden State, playing for an owner who did not want to pay anything to keep him. "I seriously thought about retirement," Parish said. "I wasn't enjoying the game."

Celtics By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 9/6/2003 SPRINGFIELD When Robert Parish delivered his acceptance speech last night, it became official. The final honoree of the Big Three, arguably the best frontcourt ever, joined Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and 26 other Celtic greats in the Hall of Fame. ADVERTISEMENT Wearing a dark, pinstriped suit and looking fit to play at 50, Parish thanked those who contributed to his success: his parents, his coaches, and his teammates. Parish was escorted by former Celtics coach K.C. Jones to shouts of "Chief," and was introduced by former Celtics teammate Bill Walton. The 2003 Hall of Fame class also included Lakers forward James Worthy; Globetrotter Meadowlark Lemon; Earl Lloyd, the NBA's first African-American player; Italian superstar Dino Meneghin; the late broadcasting legend Chick Hearn; and Louisiana Tech women's coach Leon Barmore. But the seldom-seen Parish was clearly the main attraction for a crowd with many Boston connections. "The only time I thought about the Hall of Fame was when someone brought it up," said Parish. "Growing up when I was playing basketball, I never knew anything about it until I got to college. I never even dreamed I'd be here today. Just because you've got the credentials that doesn't mean you're going to be here."

The Celtics went to four consecutive NBA Finals from 1984-1987. He heads the Celtics all-time list in one category, blocked shots, with 1,703 and is third in points (18,246) and second in rebounds (11,051) Cedric Maxwell nicknamed him "The Chief" surprisingly after the character in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"...I bet he could pull out that water fountain and throw it through a window, too. I wonder if "The Chief" ever tried to smother Cedric with a pillow, though. He is a 9 time all-star, including seven consecutive from 1981-1987. His other 2 appearances came in 1990 and 1991. Robert never made All-NBA First Team, although he finished second to Larry Bird in MVP voting for the 1981-82 season, his second in Beantown, he was once named to the All-NBA Second Team (1982) and once to the All-NBA Third Team (1989). Perhaps more impressive is his selection to the NBA's All-Time 50 Greatest Players Team . Robert is the all-time NBA leader in defensive rebounds with 10,117. Parish ranks in the top ten in NBA history in rebounds (sixth with 14,715), blocked shots (sixth with 2,361), FGs made (eighth with 9,614) and minutes played. Opposing teams are very familiar with what it means to challenge "00". Robert's game best in points came against SA on 2/17/81 when he scored 40. He pulled down a career high 32 rebounds against New York on 3/30/79.

Extractions: SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - James Worthy and Robert Parish came a long way after reluctantly taking up basketball - all the way to the Hall of Fame. "I just hated the sport," Worthy said at Friday night's induction ceremonies. But one day he noticed how stressed his parents in Gastonia, N.C., were as they struggled to pay his two older brothers' college bills. "The next day I said, `I'm going to get a scholarship,' and that was the only reason I wanted to play ball," Worthy said. Parish didn't embrace the sport either. But he was 6-foot-6 as a seventh-grader in Shreveport, La., and his junior high school coach, Coleman Kidd, pursued him. "You may not believe this, but I hated basketball," he told the audience that included Red Auerbach, the Boston Celtics' general manager who got him in a 1980 trade with Golden State.
