Extractions: ARTICLE RELATED LINKS The operation to remove Ostertag's kidney (a procedure called laparoscopic nephrectomy) was successful, although his surgeon reported that the hospital had to "search around," to find a table long enough to accommodate the 7-foot-2 basketball star. About halfway through the two-and-a-half-hour kidney removal surgery, Hall was brought in to receive the transplant, clutching a childhood blanket for good luck. Several hours later, both siblings were out of surgery. "It just clicked, it couldn't have gone better," said Hall's transplant surgeon Robert Goldstein, who also performed Mickey Mantle's liver transplant at the center in 1995. "The kidney is already working wonderfully." The first month to six weeks is when rejection would most likely surface, but "in a living, related donor like this, there is a high, high success rate," he said. Ostertag, who has played for the Jazz for seven seasons, became the first U.S. pro athlete to become a living donor while still active in his sport. Assuming there are no complications in his recovery from the operation, Ostertag will become the second player in three years to return to the NBA with only one functioning kidney. Sean Elliott went back to the San Antonio Spurs after getting a kidney from his brother in March 2000. (The difference is that Ostertag is a donor, not a recipient.)

Extractions: Brotherly Love Utah Jazz center Greg Ostertag gave the ultimate gift to his sister with diabetes: a kidney! Three years after Amy Hall was diagnosed with kidney complications, it became clear that her kidneys were beginning to fail. Since a kidney transplant can come from anyone whose body is a good match, her friends and family agreed to be tested to see if they could donate a kidney to her. She was worried that with his basketball career, which depended on his physical strength and could involve a lot of rough contact and thus physical injury, he would not be able to give up one of his two kidneys to her or undergo the operation. Greg had a different thought. To him, the answer was simple. Absolutely. When Kidneys Go Bad Click to enlarge: Kidney disease Some people with diabetes can have proteins in their urine yet never progress to kidney failure like Amy Hall did; others will have a frustrating path of continued difficulty for the kidneys to filter their blood. There is no way to know for sure who will develop early or advanced kidney disease, although researchers are looking for genes that can help them predict and treat the problem.
Extractions: Basketball News Services Utah center Greg Ostertag has never been what you'd call a fan favorite in Utah, or any other city for that matter. The player fans love to hate has played his entire career in the shadow of Jazz greats Karl Malone and John Stockton, until this season. Ostertag has stepped his game up this season, averaging career-best numbers in nearly every major category. He's a big reason the Jazz have taken the NBA by surprise and stayed within striking distance of the playoffs. Ostertag took a few moments to talk after Utah's victory over Portland on Tuesday. The Jazz are right at .500 right now. Coming into the season, would you have thought you would be at this point going into the All-Star break? Honestly, probably not, but we are. I think that's says a lot for our team that we want to play hard and win. Has Coach Sloan approached things differently this year?
