Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Charles Oakley questioned the Knicks' decision to hire Lenny Wilkens yesterday, saying his former coach "is too laid-back for New York." "The players and the fans need a feisty coach," said Oakley, the popular former Knicks power forward. "New York doesn't want a laid-back coach but that's what Lenny is. I think Mike Fratello would have been a better choice. "I can't say good call or bad call for the Knicks, but Lenny has to change his demeanor. If he reads this I hope he takes that advice like a man and doesn't take it personally. I'm just being real. I always loved Lenny ... until I got to Toronto and I played for him." Oakley, speaking over the telephone, was stunned at the news that Wilkens was hired as Don Chaney's replacement. Oakley played for Wilkens during the 2000-01 season, the year the Raptors defeated the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. Wilkens and Oakley clashed, particularly in the playoffs when Oakley began criticizing All-Star guard Vince Carter. Several of Oakley's teammates believed that had Oakley not pushed Carter, the Raptors would not have won the series.

Extractions: Charles Smith is wearing an expensive tailored suit and rimless glasses, like so many other successful businessmen who are inside Madison Square Garden on a cold winter's night to watch the Knicks. He would prefer to remain anonymous, but Smith's slender 6-10 frame is a dead give-away, especially at his former place of employment. The fans are mostly polite, but every once in a while there are those awkward moments when Smith's past, fate and an inebriated fan collide. The conversation is always quick and often brutal. "What the hell are you doing here?" a stranger once asked him. "Why are you here?" "The guy had a lot to drink," Smith recalls. "I think he was one of those Game 5 guys. It's hard to fathom that anyone would still harbor such strong feelings about that play after all this time." Tomorrow is the 10-year anniversary of the night Smith missed four point-blank layups against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals, the night he failed on that most public of stages.

I read through three chapters the first time I picked it up. I usually have to force myself to complete an assignment, but with this book I just kept reading with no pushing whatsoever! I highly recommend this book to anyone taking a class in this subject, whether or not it is the required text. It would be a great additional information source. It is helpful if you or someone you know may be going through any type of drug or alcohol treatmentfrom caffeine to heroin. I also enjoyed the online quizzes you are allowed to access once you have the book. It really enforces what you have learned. Excellent source of information!

Extractions: New York Knicks forward Tim Thomas on Thursday was fined $75,000 for publicly criticizing the game officials after a 21-point defeat to the Indiana Pacers. After Tuesday's 107-86 setback in Indiana, Thomas voiced his belief that the Knicks do not get favorable calls from the referees. "When you're playing five against eight each and every night you feel like you have no chance," he said Tuesday. "It seems like no matter what crew we get, it's the same outcome." New York was whistled for 23 personal fouls, only two more than the NBA-leading Pacers, but Thomas was called for five. "There were some questionable calls," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said after the game. "I thought Tim got fouled a few times ... but every coach thinks that." Cato, averaging 6.1 points and 7.0 rebounds, was placed on the injured list March 18 with a left shoulder sprain. Oakley, a forward, signed the first of two 10-day contracts with the club the same day and rejoined his former New York Knicks coach, Jeff Van Gundy. Oakley, a former Toronto Raptor, averaged 1.3 points and 0.7 rebounds in seven games with the Rockets.

Extractions: F ANTASY B ASKETBALL S TATISTICS October 7, 1998 A typical fantasy basketball league has 12 teams with 10 starting players on each team. To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.
