Extractions: Daily Arts Writer When Billy Crystal worked with professional wrestler Andre the Giant on the set of "The Princess Bride," the comedian-actor came up with what he thought was a hilarious idea for a film: a struggling Hollywood agent tries to make a movie star out of an enormous man he meets in a foreign country. REVIEW My Giant Two Stars At Briarwood and Showcase Eleven years later, without Andre the Giant (who passed away in 1993), Crystal has finally seen his project make it to the large screen. The end result is "My Giant," a movie that starts off amusing us, but by becoming too serious, eventually breaks down into a second-rate tear-jerker. Crystal plays Sam, a down-and-out agent, whose wife and son leave him as he travels to Romania, where his only talented performer is working on a film. While on the set, Sam is fired by his client, who feels that he is too small-time. Driving away in a rainstorm, Sam crashes his car into a lake, only to be saved by a pair of huge hands, which belong to Max (Gheorghe Muresan), a giant living all by himself in a castle.

Who could guess it's a heartfelt friendship? We go into the movie and meet Crystal, who plays Sammy, a Hollywood agent visiting the set of his single remaining client, in Romania. He's not having a good day. His wife announces she's leaving him, his client fires him, and then his car swerves into a creek. It looks like he'll drown, until he is saved by two enormous hands. Regaining consciousness later in a monastery, he discovers that the hands belong to Max (Muresan), a local giant who is the ward of the monks. In the monastery he reads Shakespeare and pines for his lost love, who jilted him and moved to New Mexico. He is a big, sweet guy. Very big. Muresan may not have heard of Roberto Rossellini's belief that everyone has at least one movie performance in him (playing himself), but he illustrates that principle nicely. Sammy, a desperate hustler, sees Max as his meal ticket out of Romania and back into the business. Promising him an eventual reunion with his lost beloved, he flies the two of them back to America, where the plot grows mired in sentimentality and we gradually realize this is not a comedy after all, but a greeting card crossed with a guide to improved self-esteem.

Despondent over that, and the fact that his separated wife, Serena (KATHLEEN QUINLAN), and son, Nick (ZANE CARNEY), are moving across the country, Sam isn't paying attention and runs his car off the road and nearly drowns in a creek. Believing that he's dead, he's happy to see two giant hands reach down into his car and pull him to safety. Those hands don't belong to God, however, but to Max (GHEORGHE MURESAN), a 7'7" caretaker who lives in a monastery. Once Sammy learns that Max is no ordinary giant and can quote Shakespeare, he instantly sees dollar figures. After casting Max in that local movie in Romania, the two new friends head to America where Sammy hopes to jumpstart his own career by making Max a movie star. Max, however, is more interested in going to see his childhood love, Lillianna (JOANNA PACULA), who now lives in New Mexico, but has never responded to any of the thousands of letters he's sent her over the past two decades. Heading to Las Vegas to audition Max for the latest Steven Seagal movie, Sammy learns some disheartening news about Max that not only changes his attitude toward his giant friend, but also toward himself.
