Maybe Australia isn't so big after all. When Gonzaga's Axel Dench, a 6-foot-11 giant from Melbourne, was asked if he had any connections to Luc Longley, the 7-2 giant from Perth, Dench came up with this link: "Well, my dad dated Luc's mom for a while before she married Luc's dad," said Dench. Good enough. But don't you suppose that just maybe Luc Longley of University of New Mexico and Chicago Bulls fame might have been the Australian center that inspired Dench to pursue his fame and basketball fortune in America? No way, said Dench.

Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian, invented basketball in 1891, at a college for YMCA professionals in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first official basketball game was played there on January 20, 1892. Dr. Naismith wanted an indoor game of vigor and grace to keep young men occupied during the long New England winters. Basketball was popular from the beginning and, within a year, was being played all over the United States. In the 1920s there were hundreds of professional basketball teams in towns and cities all over the United States. There was little organization to the professional game; players jumped all the time from team to team; and teams played in armories and smoky dance halls. In 1946, the National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed, organising the professional teams and leading to greater popularity of the professional game.

Longley, 33 said the AIS prepared him for basketball at the elite level. Training alongside so many top quality athletes under the guidance of the best coaches was an inspiration, Longley said.

The campaign is advocating that genuinely sustainable alternatives should be pursued. This would have a much smaller impact on the environment and tap into burgeoning ecotourism markets. We still have all the options open to us in WA, choices many places lost decades ago. Why follow the mistakes made in other places? Many people overseas would be shaking their heads in disbelief that wed even consider permitting this development. Theyd give their right arm for what we have in WA.

Longley has handed his 75 per cent share in the Wildcats to Vlahov, bringing to an end the pair's five-year stint at the helm of the club, which yielded a championship in 2000. Longley says he no longer has the passion to manage the Wildcats full-time. Vlahov wants to use the equity to attract new co-owners, and is looking outside Perth and potentially to South-East Asia. He has already reported keen interest from several parties over the past weeks.

Extractions: Lets take a momentary break from the playoffs to quickly review the entire league, top to bottom, using team order of our power ratings from the final day of the regular season: (After the playoffs we will create new power ratings according to potential for the future) Lakers: Keep Shaq and Kobe around. Keep Rice if possible, or replace him with a small forward who can hit open outside shots and defend. Trail Blazers: Keep the same team for another year to gell. Jazz: Problems here. Jeff Hornacek is gone, Stockton is expected to retire after next season, and Malone will disappear not too much later. Utah has almost reached the rebuilding phase - a depressing, sorry phase. Unless they get really lucky this summer with a trade (not likely) or a good free agent (not likely), this team has to pray that Bryon Russell suddenly becomes Grant Hill or face the end. Spurs: If Duncan leaves, they're finished. The Spurs role players (Elie, Elliot) may both disappear. A nervous summer awaits.
Knowing Luc Longley That player is luc longley. No, luc longley will not be enshrined in theBasketball Hall of Fame, nor does he deserve a glorious send off. http://z.lee28.tripod.com/sbnsperspectives/id14.html
Extractions: Longley won 3 titles in Chicago. On September 27, 2001 the greatest basketball player ever announced he was coming back for the second time. His return is the subject of much debate. It dominated the headlines. That player, of course, is Michael Jordan. On that same date one of the players that most benefited from Jordan's first comeback retired. His retirement did not generate much discussion. It received minimal media coverage. That player is Luc Longley. No, Luc Longley will not be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame, nor does he deserve a glorious send off. He did, however, prove one thing - sometimes nice guys do finish first. A high school student in the early 90s, I got a chance to know a young Luc Longley during his rookie season with the Timberwolves. He was the teams' first round draft pick (7th Overall) in the 1991 Draft. Since the Wolves drafted a center, Felton Spencer, a year earlier Luc's selection was not popular with the fans. When Longley's hold out lasted into the beginning of the season his popularity was damaged further. Once he signed with the team all of the boos began to fade. It wasn't his play that won them over, it was his down-to-earth personality and 'no worries' attitude that made him a fan favorite. The boos turned to 'Luuuuuucs.'
