Extractions: Fax: 617-541-2466 The Center is named after the local humanitarian and basketball hero, Reggie Lewis, who played collegiate basketball for neighboring Northeastern University and professionally, for the Boston Celtics. Celtics Captain Reggie Lewis was revered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his dedication and advocacy for the educational, physical, emotional and social well being of the youth within the Boston community. It is this legacy which, in great part, shapes the vision, mission and goals of the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Former Boston Celtics

Extractions: Men's Basketball Reggie Lewis, Sr. has been elected to the Hall of Fame for his extraordinary accomplishments in the sport of basketball. Lewis died suddenly and tragically on July 27, 1993 from a heart ailment, but it was not before he had left an indelible impression upon Northeastern and the entire city of Boston. Sometime during the Baltimore native's first season at Northeastern, it became clear: Lewis was not just a player, not just a starter, not just the league Rookie of the Year. Reggie Lewis was on his way to becoming the best Northeastern and New England had ever seen. A few short months later, the Boston Celtics drafted Lewis in the first round of the NBA draft. Lewis began his career as a reserve on the bench, then worked his way into the regular rotation, then to the starting line up and then to the Celtics' go to guy and their leader. In 1992, his selection as an NBA all-star came as no surprise. It was also no surprise when Reggie became the Celtics' sixth captain, taking the reins from Larry Bird. Lewis starred in his inaugural year at the helm of the Celtics, scoring 21 points per night and leading the Green to the '93 playoffs. But, in the Celts' first postseason game, the heart problem that would later result in his death caused Reggie to collapse and marked not only the end of his brilliant basketball career, but also a brilliant life. Reggie Lewis left fans around the nation with memories of his basketball accomplishments. But also memorable was his demeanor off the hardwood. His contributions to the community were just as consistent as his jumpshots. Reggie's widow, Donna Harris-Lewis, has continued her husbands legacy of kindness through the Reggie Lewis Foundation, which annually sponsors events like its Turkey Giveaway each Thanksgiving, an event Reggie began.

Celtics By Kathleen Burge, Globe Staff, 9/12/2003 Ten years after Celtics star Reggie Lewis collapsed and died of a heart ailment, his widow renewed her case yesterday against the cardiologist whose negligence, she argues, caused her husband's death. ADVERTISEMENT A lawyer for Donna Harris-Lewis argued to a panel of state Appeals Court judges that she should get a third chance at convincing a jury that Dr. Gilbert H. Mudge Jr. committed medical malpractice in treating her husband. The lawyer, Pamela Harris-Daley, argued that jurors in the second trial, who ruled in favor of Mudge, were prejudiced by testimony about Lewis's alleged cocaine use and about insurance money Harris-Lewis received after her husband died. Lewis was shooting baskets in a Brandeis University gym on July 27, 1993, when he collapsed and died. Harris-Lewis sued, arguing that Mudge had failed to diagnose a lethal heart condition.

Extractions: Reggie Lewis, the Boston Celtics captain who died on July 27, was much more than a basketball player. He was a genuine person who gave to the community and kids who were less fortunate than he. He took time out to give turkeys away to the poor and to help kids with basketball techniques. He wanted to be remembered as a good person first, and a good basketball player second. With all the accomplishments on the basketball court, his actions outside the game topped them. His passing left many in shock and sadness. Close to 15,000 people attended the public funeral at Northeastern University in the arena where Reggie played college basketball. His casket lay under his jersey number that the school retired in 1989. Speaker after speaker provided a perspective about Reggie that they saw, and brought a tear to many. As the last chants of Reggie were being shouted, a feeling of emptiness was felt. After the service, hundreds more people lined the streets to show their appreciation for Reggie.

Extractions: d. July 27, 1993 NBA Statistics Other Resources The 6-foot-7, 195-pound Lewis starred at Northeastern University in Boston, averaging 22.2 points a game in four years as a starter. He was chosen in the first round of the 1987 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. He missed a good part of his rookie season with an injury and was a backup during the next two seasons, but averaged over 30 points a game because he could be used at small forward or shooting guard. Very quick, Lewis could score by driving to the basket or by shooting from outside. Lewis became a starter in 1990-91, when Larry Bird was out much of the year with an injury, and he was named the team's captain after Bird's retirement in 1992. He averaged 20.8 points a game in both 1991-92 and 1992-93. In Boston's first game of the 1993 playoffs, Lewis collapsed and had to be taken to a hospital. Displeased when a team of doctors told him he would have to give up basketball because of a heart disease, Lewis changed hospitals and doctors in the middle of the night. He was then advised that his heart was healthy and that he could begin training again, under medical supervision. He died of a heart attack while taking part in an unsupervised workout. Extractions: He was the quiet Celtic with the infectious smile. He was reserved and almost shy but his actions, both on and off the basketball court, spoke much louder than any words. He was a 6-7-basketball player, the captain of the team and the leading scorer. He was a devoted husband, father and friend to many. He was the torchbearer to a new Green and White generation. He was a soft-spoken yet powerful leader. Reggie Lewis, 27 years old, fell victim to natural causes and on Tuesday, July 27, 1993, Celtics fans tearfully said, 'good bye'. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Lewis enjoyed success and early fame as a key member of a 50-0 Dunbar High School basketball team that also featured future NBA players Reggie Williams, David Wingate and Tyrone "Mugsy" Bogues. But he never let undefeated seasons or 30-point scoring nights interfere or distract the soul, the personality, the man himself.
