Knight averaged 4.3 points, 3.2 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 32 games this season with Washington, which acquired him on November 5, 2003 in a trade with Phoenix for center Jahadi White.

In the past four seasons, the Cardinal has been to the NCAA Tournament, and last year, Montgomery directed the team to an appearance in the NCAA Final Four. "Walking around San Antonio and seeing all the people wearing their Stanford stuff and recognizing so many familiar faces was great," said Montgomery. "It brought home what college basketball is all about, which is being proud of your school annd how your players handle themselves and compete. So from a university standpoint, there is nothing better. From a basketball standpoint, this puts us in the upper echelon." Stanford finished the 1997-98 season with a 30-5 record and a #4 national ranking in the final USA Today/ESPN poll. The Cardinal finished tenth in the Associated Press poll. Both final rankings represented the Cardinal's best ever finishes in the respective rankings.

Extractions: Atlanta NEW LINEUP: The trade with the Sixers gives the Hawks a foundation to build upon: Theo Ratliff in the middle, Toni Kukoc at small forward, Loronzen Wright at power forward, Jason Terry at shooting guard and Brevin Knight at point guard. Of course, that lineup might not play together much this season, as Ratliff recovers from wrist surgery performed the day before the trade.... The Hawks knew C Dikembe Mutombo wanted to play for a team with a chance to win a title and that he likely would sign with another team after the season as a free agent. The Hawks weren't about to let him bolt without receiving players in return. They could have waited until the offseason to try to deal him in a sign-and-trade maneuver, but G.M. Pete Babcock says the deal with the Sixers was a good one, and there was no guarantee the Hawks could have gotten more later. SEE A DIFFERENT GAME: In Kukoc, the team has the answer to its season-long small forward woes. Coach Lon Kruger has tried four players at that spot with no successful results. Kukoc will benefit from the speed of Terry and Knight and their passing on the perimeter Kukoc can create off the dribble and post up. His skill is sorely needed. He likely will be the team's second offensive option behind Terry. Kukoc, once comfortable, should be an 18-point scorer. Curtis Bunn

He finished his Stanford basketball career as the school's all-time scorer, while playing on the second-winningest Cardinal team ever. Adam Keefe could dunk, too. He also scored and rebounded with a passion, winding up as the No. 2 career scorer and No. 1 rebounder in school history. When Brevin Knight walks off the floor in Maples Pavilion on Saturday night, following Stanford's Pacific-10 Conference finale against Arizona State (7:30 p.m.), he, too, will pass into Cardinal lore as did Lichti and Keefe. While the 5-foot-10 Knight didn't match up physically with the 6-4 Lichti and the 6-9 Keefe or leave his name as often in the record books, Knight's impact during coach Mike Montgomery's tenure at Stanford may be the most important. "It's a legacy of success," Montgomery said this week as he prepared his 18-7 team for a run at an NCAA berth. "Of all the guys here that I've had, certainly he's the one who's come in, in the most difficult situation because we were coming off a real bad year.

Extractions: FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER MILWAUKEE Brevin Knight has had a hard time finding a home in the NBA. He has been in the league since 1997-98 and played for six teams, including three this season. But the Bucks have proved they are the perfect home for castoffs. Just ask starting point guard Damon Jones, who has been waived many times. In Milwaukee, Knight seems to have found a niche as a backup guard. He has been with the Bucks for almost two months, which isn't long enough to discover where all the good bratwurst is, but Milwaukee is Knight's best opportunity in a while. With point guard T.J. Ford injured, Knight has averaged 4.5 points, 3.3 assists, 2.75 steals and 21.3 minutes in four playoff games against the Pistons. After his winding journey, making the playoffs is special for Knight. The last time Knight had appeared in a playoff game was in 1998, when he was a rookie with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
