Extractions: Publication Date: Friday Jun 27, 1997 Stanford All-American guard is ready for challenge in NBA following draft Brevin Knight answered the question regarding his lack of size when he was picked 16th overall in the National Basketball Association draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. By becoming a first-round selection, Knight's 5-foot-10 stature obviously wasn't a problem for the Cavs. There's still another question awaiting Knight, however, and that's to when he'll get a chance to prove himself as a starter in the NBA. "Sooner or later," Knight said, "it's going to be turned over to me, at Cleveland or wherever." Right now, Knight is content to play a reserve role behind Cleveland's starting all-star point guard Terrell Brandon. "I would love to play behind a great point guard, at least for a couple years, so that it gives me a chance to learn the game," said Knight, who feels confident he can run the show once called upon. "I think I'm the definition of what a point guard is," he said. "To me, that means to run the team, get others involved, make others better, and then take care of myself." That's pretty much Knight did during his stellar four-year career at Stanfordhe took care of others before himself. Among his school records were career assists (780), single-season assists (234 this past season), career steals (298), single-season steals (83 this past year), single-game assists (12) and single-game steals (10).

Extractions: InsideHoops felt that Elton Brand and Steve Francis deserved to share the Rookie of the Year award. NBA voters agreed. It takes guts to declare that one guy deserves an award over another. But if two guys were equally impressive, and neither had some sort of x-factor that puts him over the top (some say Francis' x-factor was his stellar performance in the slam dunk competition - but we'll pass on using that), calling it a tie isn't just safe - it's correct. We call it a tie. Steve Francis, while flashy and potentially the next Allen Iverson (or Stephon Marbury?) should become an all-star guard in a season or two (or three, if he falls off a bit). And thanks to the total lack of good power forwards in the East, we say Elton Brand becomes an all star this coming season. Lamar Odom was the clear #3. At the start of the season, he produced great stats, but eventually Lamar realized that he was a Los Angeles Clipper and, as Clippers are suppossed to, he fell off.

Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER OAKLAND - The Nets are suffering right now and it's not just because they are playing Western Conference teams. Jason Kidd's bruised left knee has limited him to power walking and exercising for the week. Richard Jefferson has an aching right ankle and left knee. And now Kenyon Martin "is hurting" with sore knees. "Everybody has got some pain right now this time in the season," Nets CEO Rod Thorn said. "There is nobody that doesn't have no pain. You just hope that it is just pain and not something that is really hurt." The Nets hobble into The Arena tonight to face Golden State with Kidd doubtful. After missing the last two games, Kidd will see how his knee feels today before making a decision. He has not played since Sunday against the Lakers. "We'll evaluate him (today)," Thorn said. "There is a chance he won't play again but we have to see where he is. The swelling has gotten better." Kidd, who says the pain in his leg is gone, is tempted to play but he also reiterated that it took him seven days to rehab a previous left knee bruise earlier this season. "I would love to play (today) but we have a bigger picture in the sense of the playoffs," said Kidd, whose Nets are 1-2 without him this season. "I want to make sure I don't jeopardize my health and my teammates in the sense of doing something silly. So I want to make sure I'm 100%."

To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.

Didn't get to do as much as I wanted because I was only there a few days and was mostly laid up with a bad fever for one of them, but fortunately it wore off quickly. Basketball court Taken at the FleetCenter before a game between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers. This was the first night of my stay in Boston and I decided to get a ticket for a game ahead of time. It just so happened that this was the first night of the new basketball court for the Celtics, coming after they "retired" the old floor that was used in the Boston Garden for years.
