Extractions: Intramurals The No.1 ranked NENAS (8-0) kept up their winning ways breezing to their first title by knocking out No. 2 Player Pool (3-4) 69-44. It was never supposed to be a close contest if you looked at the intangibles (height, skill level, etc.), but a championship atmosphere was hopefully enough to propel the Player Pool to th e top of their game. But it didn't happen on this night and maybe not any night. Next season, when the men's basketball team enters the Big Sky Conference to face its unfamiliar stiff competition, it would be advised that they don't play the same way they did against a skilled ASREC squad, which should be no-match. Yes, the ultimate goal was accomplished, winning the game, but the margin wasn't a fa ir account of the game. James Morris, who played in 1992-93, lit it up for a hard fought 29 points despite standing 5-feet 9-inches,compared to the RED SHIRTS smallest player at 6-feet 3-inches. The RED SHIRTS played with reckless abandon and never kept two feet on the ground at a time. They were impressive above the rim and on the boards but the three-point line was their downfall. ASREC's Trent Morgan and Morris combined for 12 on the night.

Jackson and University of South Carolina volleyball player Shani Abshier, the SEC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, were selected for top league honors by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 12 SEC schools. Each athlete receives a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship. Jackson becomes the fifth Mississippi State athlete to receive the prestigious SEC Scholar-Athlete Award since 1990. Previous recipients have included Burke Masters (baseball, 1990), Aimee York (volleyball, 1993), Tammy Newlon (women's basketball, 1994), and April Ecke (cross-country, 1995). Jackson, who earned his fourth varsity letter in his third year as a starting pitcher, has posted a 22-7 overall career record at Mississippi State, and led the 1998 team with an 9-2 record (as of May 27). Jackson compiled a 9-4 record on Mississippi State's 1997 NCAA College World Series team, earning Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors after a career-best 15-strikeout game against top-ranked LSU. He was later selected by the New York Mets in the 1997 June draft.

Books are intended for distribution to SIUC's five Head Start centers in Jackson and Williamson counties, but a number of other organizations will be reaping benefits from the drive. SIUC's Head Start centers serve more than 400 preschoolers, ages 3 to 5, at its centers. Head Start programs focus on meeting the social, intellectual, emotional and physical needs of preschool children in low-income families. Total books collected for the 2000 effort were 2,675. Of that number, 1,191 will go to SIUC Head Start centers. Another 80 will be going to the Su Casa Head Start center in Union County, a center for children of migrant workers. The "I Can Read" program at the Eurma C. Hayes Center in Carbondale will receive 1,233 books that are appropriate for older children (grades 1-6), as well as the 93 religious books donated to the drive.
