This is a story of a basketball team in Fall River Mass. that follows the same route as Friday Night Lights. It can be boring and long winded. Durand It is great to see your hometown guy playing for a professional team. Chris Herren is a hometown guy now playing for a hometown team. What could be better than that? The Celtics are just plain awful and few people looked forward to the 2000-2001 season but the season to come now has been salvaged thanks to the former Durfee High School athlete putting on the green. The homecoming was somewhat dampened. A wire story published in a local newspaper made a passing reference to Chris Herren's younger days and the story was considered to be hurtful by family and friends. The past sometimes should remain in the past, especially when it has nothing to do with the present. We see a mature Chris dealing with the Boston press. When I met him for the first time a few months ago, I was impressed with his humility. I have to tell you, I wouldn't have been able to pick him out of a crowd. He is without airs, unassuming and down to earth. During a meeting with the press at the Fleet Center, Chris handled himself like the mature professional he is. He talked about his wife and child and how it so good to come home. And Chris's older brother, the Hurricane, is a natural also. Mike still works with city kids in the toughest projects of Fall River. He is a tough, no-nonsense guy who gets on the court to referee and expects the players to understand that there are rules to be followed. He didn't promote himself but season after season he would be in the toughest parts of town working with some pretty tough kids.

Templeton Center. PC jumped out to a 19-8 first half lead thanks in part to seven points from freshman forward Grant Herren (Oviedo, Fla.). The Blue Hose would hold the lead and push it to it's biggest margin of 15 points on two occasions including the last at 41-26 at the half. PC was red-hot from the field in the first half, shooting 61.5% from the field while the Lions struggled to shoot 34.4%. The Blue Hose used a 15-2 run to open the second half and push the lead to 55-28 with 15:23 remaining. Mars Hill would not be able to muster a comeback until late when they cut the lead under 20 points at 74-57 with 1:34 remaining on a layup by senior guard Travis Wilson (Greenville, S.C.). PC's freshman center Brian Epperly's (Roanoke, Va.) layup with 1:15 remaining put the final touches on the Blue Hose victory.

Either way, there were the words printed right there in black and white for everyone to see: "I'm going to kill everyone in this league." That was the bold prediction from a junior transfer from Virginia. Everyone knows it's one thing to be a good player who's confident in his abilities, quite another to put yourself - and your team - on the line by providing instant bulletin board material. Point guard Rafer Alston missed the first game of the season after being suspended for an assault charge. The assault case against Alston was dismissed Wednesday after he showed a judge proof that 40 hours of community service had been completed. Alston had pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge for punching and choking neighbors last year.

Extractions: MIDWEST DIVISION DALLAS MAVERICKS: New guy Christian Laettner has a reputation of being a locker room problem, but the Mavericks think they have enough coaches and upbeat personalities to maintain team harmony. Laettner is supposed to be coming on as the backup to starting C Shawn Bradley, but figures to be the starter eventually. Coach Don Nelson thinks Bradley is better off the bench because of his tendency to collect early fouls.... PF Terry Mills, who arrived with Laettner from the Pistons, also will contend for frontcourt minutes. Mills' long-range shooting ability should be compatible to Nelson's uptempo offense. Ken Sins DENVER NUGGETS: The Nuggets have three point guards (Nick Van Exel, Chris Herren and Cory Alexander) and likely will invite Andre Woolridge to camp. Woolridge has all the tools the Nuggets need in a backup. Herren has come a long way from the nervous kid who couldn't buy a bucket at in the '99 summer league. Last season, Alexander played only when Dan Issel had no options left. Look for Alexander to get plenty of playing time in the preseason with the idea that if he plays well, a team in need of a point guard takes him and his contract off the team's hands. Issel knows he must get Van Exel more rest-the question is which option Issel chooses to achieve that. Michael BeDan

Extractions: Atlanta LITTLE EXPERIENCE: Unable to make any deals, the team is stuck in neutral. And it is stuck with a roster that will end up among the youngest in the league. More experience could be lost if the team moves C Dikembe Mutombo. He wants an increase in his $14 million salary, but paying him what he wants would kill all the salary cap space the team has looked forward to having. ROOM TO GROW: The club still likes F DerMarr Johnson as its first pick. However, after a respectable showing in the first rookie/free agent camp in Georgia, Johnson at times looked overmatched in a Boston camp. Getting off his shot will be much more of a chore on the NBA level than at Cincinnati. And he learned that it's far more difficult to hide his defensive weakness playing against stronger, quicker players. He'll play almost exclusively at off-guard behind Jim Jackson. To stay on the court, Johnson has to work on his ballhandling so he can free himself to launch jump shots. Curtis Bunn Boston PACKAGE DEAL: The roster may be set, at least at the top, but the team is open to tinkering with the middle and lower levelsespecially if it can save money, which seems to be as much of a driving force as talent. The latest possible deal to emerge is with Denver, a frequent trading partner of the Rick Pitino-led Celtics. Boston would send G/F Calbert Cheaney and newly acquired PC Robert Pack to the Nuggets for SC Bryant Stith and PC Chris Herren. Pack can't be traded again for 60 days, meaning anyone coming to Boston for him would miss most of training camp, something Pitino dislikes. The appeal for the Celtics would be dumping Cheaney, who has two years left on a three-year, $6.6 million deal Pitino gave him last year.

Extractions: This book was well written and told a good story. But i grew up in fall river and know the herrens personally - in other words there is alot more to the herren brothers and fall river than what was mentioned in the book (if you can believe it) but whatever. last I heard Christopher was married with children and doing well. big deal he screwed up. i have. chances are you have. he was a teenager. The one thing i dont get is that 75% of fall river never even heard of chris herren. The author makes a big deal about how important basketball is to the city but its a bunch of crap. good story though if youve never been to fall river. dont get me wrong the majority of the story is true but the man is trying to sell books. you know what ?christopher no longer lives in fall river and thats a dream for most fallrivians itself. basketball got him out of there - thats almost as good as a 25 milliuon dollar NBA contract. good for you chris

These players, and dozens more, would be suiting up for their college teams this winter if they had not given up their remaining eligibility in pursuit of pro careers. Some, like Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant, have skipped college altogether and gone straight to the NBA following their prep careers. This mass exodus of stars to the pros has created a parity never before seen in college basketball. More teams than ever have realistic Final Four aspirations. Schools are looking increasingly to the junior college ranks and to transfers as players leave early and recruits fail to qualify immediately under the NCAA's new and tougher admissions standards. The road to Indianapolis is wide open. The teams with the most talent are the teams with the biggest underachievers and the Top 25 is full of teams that have failed to live up their potential. The team with this year's most complete blend of incumbents, freshmen and transfers is the Cincinnati Bearcats. They are the early favorites to cut down the nets in Indianapolis. Here's a look at the Top 10:
