Extractions: Where HoopHeads Get Their Fix! Main July 25, 2003 Its Lets Make A Deal In The NBA Therell be no dog days of summer in the NBA this year. In the past two days, seven teams have participated in two trades that have sent 11 players, including four former All-Stars, to new addresses. With so much happening this quickly, it can be tough to determine the who/what/why/when aspect of each trade. Thats where Notes From A Basketball Junkie comes in. Im going to break down each of the big trades beginning with yesterdays four-team swap. The Who: Minnesotas franchise, Kevin Garnet, is the prize of next years free agent class. TWolve GM Kevin McHale is trying to convince him that he can stay in Minnesota and win in the playoffs, which Minnesota has yet to do, by surrounding him with a slew of hard-nosed and high-scoring players. The energetic Spree fits that mold perfectly on the court. Its off the court where he brings considerable baggage to a team that has prided itself on having a roster thats equal parts character and talent. Minnesotas acquisitions of Spree and Sam Cassell, the TWolves other big off-season acquisition, may be a signal that times have changed and that Minnesota has decided that talent is the more important part of that equation.
