Extractions: Fun facts about Elton: click here. -Early Years, College, and the NBA. -Elton Brand's Kingdom Elton's mother taught him a lot and instilled good behavior and a work ethic, his mom's attitude kept him positive. She was always pushing him to be the best, and to read books. Elton and his family have lots of roots in Westchester County. Elton's grandmother lives in Ossining and has uncles and aunts who live throughout the county. He misses the people and being away from his friends. He liked growing up in Westchester County it wasn't like a fast-paced city life, it was a good environment. Elton goes back to visit in the offseason because he loves the area, the scenery, and driving up Route 9 and seeing all the trees, as he described. Elton's favorite hangouts in Peekskill is not a basketball court but a restaurant. He liked going to Highland Pizza in Peekskill late at night and talking to his friends for hours and hours. Elton loves the chicken parmesan. Highland Pizza has a Pataki Pizza and will soon be offering an Elton chicken parmesan sandwich. Of course, now that Elton has his lucrative contract with the Clippers he could buy Highland Pizza. He has not forgotten where he came from and who helped him get there. Most people are so impressed by his charm and gentle-nature that after the first time they meet him, they call him a friend. There is definitely a bright future for this young star. Gov. Pataki has even loftier expectations for him though. "There are parallels between Elton and presidential candidate Bill Bradley. Like Elton, Bill was always underestimated and always made the effort to be a great player and citizen," he explained. Brand for president in 2004, anyone?

Extractions: A Brand New Day. -The Right Brand:(By Adnan Virk) The NBA's got an image problem. You hear it all the time. It's about as insightful as somebody telling you that Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton were doomed from the start. Gee, ya think? Didn't they used to drink each other's blood? Oh wait, that was Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold. Back to the topic at hand. How do you revive interest in a league which since the departure of one Michael Jordan, has seen its popularity decrease and has garnered more bad press than Enron and Martha Stewart combined? Jason and Joumanna Kidd fighting over french fries, Allen Iverson's combativeness on and off the court, Rasheed Wallace well, basically just being Rasheed Wallace hothead extraordinaire - would be a few examples. So where is that hoops messiah, that future king of the court, the Royal of the Roundball? LeBron James, come on down. But before we anoint the Next One, let us pause to praise what already exists. And that's a man named Brand. Elton Brand.

Extractions: Elton Brand took a moment to talk about basketball and the Los Angeles Clippers. It was a difficult year for the team with injury after injury . . . and loss after loss. Still, Elton remains upbeat and optimistic for the future: How disappointing was the season for you? - It was a disappointment because I remember when we played the Memphis Grizzlies [on January 11]. We were just two games behind them at that time. We lost in overtime and then they won ten in a row. Too many injuries and tough losses. Are you planning on playing in the Olympics if asked? - Of course its an honor to represent your country but I havent spoken to them in a while. [Note: Things move quickly, Elton received a call on April 13 and is likely to join the American team]. Was it difficult playing for the USA team the last couple of years, playing basketball for nearly two straight years? - No, not at all, especially with the times, things that are going on in the world.

Extractions: The MVP debate in the NBA has gotten a little kooky over the past couple of years. It's basically centered on how bad a team would be without a certain player rather than how good they are with that player. What makes this doubly bad is that figuring out how bad the team would be without a given player is largely conjecture. Last year Allen Iverson won the trophy using this logic, despite the fact that the Sixers have played quite competently when he has been out the last two years. Similarly, the argument that was used to screw Shaquille O'Neal last year was that the Lakers would be still be OK without him because they have Kobe Bryant; to me the point is that with Shaquille O'Neal they beat the snot out of everybody. I do think it's important to picture how a team would be without a given player. However, it's one of many factors. I don't base my vote on it because it's totally subjective. Look at this way: almost any MVP candidate will have played at least 70 games, which means by and large you won't haven't seen the team play without the guy, so basically you don't know how much of a difference he makes and are pulling an answer out of your butt.
