Extractions: Jackets play clubs in France Georgia Tech's basketball team got a sample of international basketball this falla 12-day trip to France practicing against some of Europe's best clubs. The trip, sponsored by the Nike shoe company, combined basketball and cultural education, said head basketball coach Bobby Cremins. "Nike takes a school over there every year," Cremins said. "We've been waiting in line to do this for a long time." The Jackets played seven games against some of the best club teams in France, and participated in a tournament featuring some of the national champions from other European nations. But the itinerary also included such "must see" events as the Eiffel Tower; the Louvre museum; a boat tour of Paris; and visits to Monaco, Nice, Antibes and Limoges. "When something like this happens, I do it mostly for fun," Cremins said. "You don't want to burn out players before the season starts. This is the fun part of coaching." The trip had its serious aspect, however, because a new NCAA rule does not allow practice to begin until Nov. 1. Practice formerly began Oct. 15. Cremins said the trip allowed Tech to experiment with some offensive and defensive schemes. For sophomore guard Travis Best, it was the second leg of a month-long European bonanza. Best was named to a team of Atlantic Coast all-stars which toured Belgium, Holland and Germany in early August.

Extractions: By Mike Stamus Bobby Cremins could almost name his starting lineup for this season before Georgia Tech began basketball practice in October, but the 1 11the-year head coach hedges on placing too much expectation on two highly recruited freshmen. Many observers consider 5-11 point guard Travis Best of Springfield, Mass., and 6-8 forward James Forrest of Atlanta, probable startersand Cremins said it could happen. "The game plan right now is that I'd like to see the two freshmen be impact players," Cremins said. "There's no guarantee, but I'd like to see them both start. It would bring some stability and give us a foundation to build on. We're going to put them to the test." Best and Forrest were both Parade magazine prep all-Americans Best, a left-hander, scored 81 points in a high-school game last winter, and is penciled in to fill the void left by all-American Kenny Anderson, who was drafted first round, second pick by the New Jersey Nets of the National Basketball Association. Forrest was the State of Georgia Player of the Year. Cremins welcomed a 15-man squad to practice on Oct. 15, and fields one of the deepest and most balanced Tech teams of his tenure.

Travis County's Moya Park ain't exactly pristine wilderness, but we watched these three devoted naturalists hold the rapt attention of a gaggle of Girl Scouts here one afternoon. There was an owl's nest in an old tree, evident from tiny mouse bones and tufts of gray fur at the base of the tree, odd bugs and fossils in the creek, and wild plants to discover and discuss. The enthusiasm of these guides was contagious, like when they imitated a screech owl, which sounds "like a tiny horse," or the barred owl, which asks "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you?" Extractions: Georgia Tech saw the return of one of its favorite sons to the city of Atlanta last Friday night as Travis Best made his professional basketball debut. Best, who finished his four-year career at Tech as the school's all-time assist leader and fourth on the career scoring list, was in town for opening night in the National Basketball Association as his Indiana Pacers faced the hometown Atlanta Hawks. Best played flawlessly in limited action as the Pacers third point-guard. His one assist in the first half and two crucial free throws in the final minutes with the game in doubt helped his team to a 107-103 road win. Although he did not get a chance to display his skills that earned him the nickname, "The Springfield Rifle," the Atlantic Coast Conference's second leading scorer last season contributed in other ways. "I was just happy to get in there in front of the Atlanta crowd," said Best. Originally hailing from Springfield, Massachusetts, Atlanta has been a second home to Best. "I was here, in Atlanta [on the night of the NBA draft]. My whole family came down and we just kind of had a party," said this year's 23rd draft choice.

There's some old-line basketball aristocracy with Oklahoma State and Duke, some ongoing contemporary tyranny with Connecticut, and some semiupstart stuff going on with Georgia Tech. ADVERTISEMENT Here's a look at the contenders for the 2004 NCAA men's basketball championship, in alphabetical order: 1. Connecticut Why are the Huskies this good, anyway? Basketball always mattered at UConn, but not like this. Under Hugh Greer (1946-63, 286-112), the Huskies were the scourge of the old Yankee Conference, making seven NCAA appearances (1-8). Fred Shabel's 1964-65 team was 23-3, losing in the NCAA tourney to powerhouse St. Joe's in the type of first-round pairing you couldn't get today. Players were essentially home-grown (with an occasional recruiting trip to New York or Massachusetts). The team played in the cozy 4,000-seat Field House. It entered the Big East as a charter member and went 37-61 in league play the first seven years. And then?
