The Sports Retort: Vin Baker Suspended, And It Smells Fishy Ok, the first post said this site would be mainly about baseball, but here s one about basketball. Celtics forward vin baker has been suspended indefinitely http://www.sportsretort.com/2004/01/vin_baker_suspe.html
Extractions: Main Ok, the first post said this site would be mainly about baseball, but here's one about basketball. Celtics forward Vin Baker has been suspended indefinitely for non-compliance with his treatment program for alcoholism. The link is to the Boston Globe story, but in case that page disappears into the Globe's archives, here's another link at CNN/SI Basically, the story is that Baker has committed a third violation of his aftercare program and has been accordingly been suspended indefinitely. The articles that have come out today suggest that the suspension (and so-called "third strike") could lead to the termination of Baker's contract. Not all the facts are in yet, but so far, this smells fishy. The Celtics have much to gain from voiding Baker's contract. There's clearly a conflict of interest here. A little background for non-Celtics fans: the Celtics traded for Vin Baker and his gigantic contract during the 2002 offseason despite his precipitous decline. In his best season, Baker averaged 21.0 points and 10.3 rebounds, but such glory seemed long gone, as the player the Celtics acquired was coming off four seasons of overweight mediocrity. Even worse, he had several years remaining on his 7-year $86 million contract. The general response of Boston fans was:

Extractions: Main The Celtics put forward Vin Baker on waivers Friday. It is assumed that the move is a step towards releasing him and terminating his contract for violating the terms of his alcohol rehabilitation aftercare agreement. It is also possible that the Celtics and Baker's representatives will negotiate a buyout of the contract. I kicked off this weblog with a post when Baker was first suspended . I thought the Celtics' moves stunk then, and so far I still think it's an ugly situation. Click the link below for more.

Bakers foundation has raised more than $250,000 to offer disadvantaged youth full and partial scholarships to the University of Hartford, his alma mater. He continually raises money for other youth charity groups in Connecticut, as well as bringing in other NBA players and friends to participate in charity events and basketball clinics for the area youth. Article vin baker needs to get away from basketball for a while and give himself the time to heal the wounds his alcoholism has given him. http://www.anchorweb.org/Sports/022404/byebye.html
Extractions: Baker started the season out so promisingly and then he succumbed to the disease that has plagued the final stages of what was turning out to be an illustrious career. However, the impending release of Baker from the Celtics and subsequent termination of his contract cannot be completely looked at as a bad thing. In fact, it will drastically help both the Celtics organization and Vin Baker himself.
Extractions: GOOD HEALTH IS ONE OF THE KEYS TO A CHILD REACHING THEIR FULL POTENTIAL Connecticut native and Boston Celtics forward Vin Baker has never forgotten the community that supported him and helped him to become a National Basketball Association first round draft choice. Its this recognition of the special gifts hes been given rare athletic ability, a college education, a career playing a game he loves and lasting friendships that have led Vin to help support Connecticut Childrens Medical Center through the Vin Baker Stand Tall Foundation. According to Jay Nkonoki, executive director of the Stand Tall Foundation, Vin feels the local community embraced him during his high school and college playing days and gave him the opportunity to grow and excel. The whole community has always supported Vin, and he and his family remain deeply appreciative, explains Jay. This is the primary reason Vin started the foundation, as a vehicle to give back to the community that gave so much to him. The focus of the Stand Tall Foundation is the overall development and well-being of children. Vin feels that good health is one of the keys to a child reaching his or her full potential. Kids are the future, and Vin understands that a childs health is of the utmost importance, says Jay. Without their health, the opportunities wont be there for them. Given Vins beliefs, Connecticut Childrens Medical Center was a natural match for the foundation.
